LeBron James has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to continue his NBA career with another team, according to reports. This decision, conveyed by his representative Rich Paul, signals the end of James’s eight-season tenure with the Lakers, during which he helped the franchise secure an NBA championship in 2020.

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly pursuing James, potentially setting the stage for him to join former rivals Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. James previously faced Curry and Green in the NBA finals for four consecutive seasons between 2015 and 2018 while playing for the Cavaliers. The Warriors are also understood to be considering signing Anthony Davis.

The free agency negotiation period for players opened at 6pm ET on Tuesday, though players cannot officially sign with new teams until 6 July, when the league’s offseason moratorium is lifted. James, who will be 42 during the 2026-27 season, is not retiring, as confirmed by Paul.

Warriors’ roster flexibility

Draymond Green has not exercised his player option for the upcoming season, a move that provides the Golden State Warriors with financial flexibility for potential roster changes. Green stated that his decision to opt out was made to work with the organisation, highlighting his long-standing relationship with the team.

Green mentioned, “Personally, I’m always willing to work with the team on whatever is best, especially at this point in my career. So my decision to opt out was for a few reasons. As you all know, I’ve always taken the approach of working with the organization. I’ve been in one place for 14 years. It’s more of a family to me than anything.”

This strategic move by Green could be a factor in convincing James to join the Warriors, given James’s close relationships with Green, Stephen Curry, and Warriors coach Steve Kerr. Reports on Monday indicated the Warriors’ strong interest in adding James to their roster.

LeBron James, a 22-time All-Star, has achieved this honour every year from 2005 to 2026. He has also been named league MVP four times, a total surpassed only by Michael Jordan, Bill Russell, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Across his career, James has averaged 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game. He completed his 23rd NBA season, during which his eldest son, Bronny, became his teammate with the Lakers. James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds this past season.
