British Grand Prix: More Than a Race

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is being described as a comprehensive weekend event, extending beyond just the race itself. According to the chief executive of Silverstone, Stuart Pringle, the event encompasses entertainment, live music, hospitality, and active participation. This year marks the 76th running of the event at the Northamptonshire circuit, which has a significant economic and cultural impact on the region.

Last year, the Grand Prix generated £154 million for the local economy over a period of three and a half days. This year, approximately 565,000 Formula 1 fans are anticipated to attend, which would surpass last year’s record attendance. Some attendees arrived as early as Wednesday, engaging in various activities such as watching England’s FIFA World Cup victory over DR Congo on large screens.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-343" src="https://newsgb.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/inline_gn-d21bd5375e67_img-1.webp" alt="General view of fans ahead of the British Grand Prix.

The entertainment programme also included a concert on Thursday, featuring French DJ and record producer David Guetta and singer Anne-Marie, drawing tens of thousands of people. Pringle noted that building the event’s reputation within the music industry has taken several years, but now attracts major artists such as Sam Fender and Raye from last year, and Richard Ashcroft scheduled for Friday. Many of these artists are also significant F1 fans, enjoying their involvement in the event. Additionally, a stand-up comedy programme is part of the offerings, with comedian and actor Jack Whitehall among the performers.

Economic Contributions and Motorsport Engineering

Beyond the immediate event, Pringle highlighted the year-round impact of the sport on the local economy. He explained that the continuous running of the British Grand Prix for 75 years has fostered a world-class high-performance motorsport engineering sector. This sector has developed into a significant industrial cluster, with Silverstone at its core. The jobs within high-performance motorsport engineering are considered almost twice as beneficial to the economy compared to other types of employment.

This economic contribution is a key aspect of how the British Grand Prix drives growth in the central region of the country. Pringle has previously stated that between 40,000 and 50,000 individuals are employed in this sector. The Grand Prix weekend features a 17-lap sprint race scheduled for Saturday, commencing at 12:00 BST, while the main 52-lap grand prix will start on Sunday at 15:00.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-344" src="https://newsgb.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/inline_gn-d21bd5375e67_img-3.webp" alt="Lewis Hamilton is wearing a red and white top, has short black hair in tight cornrows and has a trimmed black beard.

When asked about his preferred winner for the British Grand Prix, Pringle humorously compared it to choosing a favourite child. He did, however, suggest that a victory for Lewis Hamilton with a new team would be a remarkable story. He also noted that for Hamilton to achieve 10 wins at Silverstone would be an exceptional feat, acknowledging the popularity of Ferrari.

Weather Forecast for the Race Weekend

The British Grand Prix, which is the ninth round of the season, is set to experience favourable weather conditions. The region has recently been in a heatwave, and this warm weather is expected to continue for the event at Silverstone. On Friday, July 3, for the practice and sprint qualifying sessions, sunny conditions are anticipated with temperatures ranging from 12°C in the morning to a high of 24°C. Moderate winds are expected to average around 15 km/h, with gusts potentially reaching 35 km/h. There is no chance of rain, as a ridge of high pressure will provide dry conditions, with track temperatures possibly reaching the low 40s during the afternoon.

Saturday, July 4, for the sprint and qualifying sessions, is forecast to be warmer and dry. High temperatures are expected to be in the mid-20s, with no rain. Breezy afternoon conditions could develop, with common gusts from 35-45 km/h and peak gusts possibly approaching 50 km/h. Track temperatures could reach near 40-41°C, potentially higher with increased afternoon sunshine. For the main race on Sunday, July 5, excellent weather is predicted, with temperatures ranging from 16°C in the early morning to a peak of 24°C. Track temperatures are expected to reach at least the low 40s, with a mix of clouds and sun. Winds will remain moderate at an average speed of 15 km/h, with gusts up to 35-40 km/h, and no precipitation is expected.

The race will feature competition among drivers such as George Russell and Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen also aiming for strong performances. For those unable to attend Silverstone, commentary on the race will be available across various platforms, including BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds.

By Lucy Ashby — 3 July 2026 — 3 min read

Rice’s fitness concerns and versatility

England head coach Thomas Tuchel has indicated that Declan Rice is anticipated to be available for the FIFA World Cup last-16 match against Mexico. This comes despite the midfielder experiencing what Tuchel described as “terrible pain” due to an ongoing nerve issue in his back. Rice was substituted late in England‘s 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the last 32, a match where his versatility was highlighted.

Throughout the tournament, the 27-year-old has been managing various fitness challenges, including a calf injury that led him to miss the final group-stage game against Panama, as well as hamstring and back problems. These issues have necessitated the use of compression sleeves on his legs. Tuchel noted that Rice‘s resilience and stamina are well-known, and his admission of “terrible pain” signals the seriousness of the discomfort he is enduring.

During the match against DR Congo, with England trailing 1-0 after an early goal from Brian Cipenga, Tuchel made a tactical adjustment, moving Rice to right-back to accommodate an additional forward, Eberechi Eze. This strategic shift proved effective, contributing to England‘s comeback. Rice, who joined Arsenal for a reported £100 million in 2023, acknowledged that playing at right-back was challenging, describing it as “probably the hardest 12 minutes of the game.” He expressed a preference not to play in that position in future matches, though he is willing to do anything for the team.

Manager’s comments and team’s defensive situation

Tuchel confirmed that Rice had assured him the pain was not indicative of an injury and that he expected to recover. “He just said after the game it’s not an issue, he will recover, so there is no injury. He was just in pain, so I hope he is right. It’s more nerval pain,” Tuchel stated. When asked if Rice could continue to manage the pain from game to game, Tuchel responded affirmatively, “He can, yeah.”

The coach’s primary focus remains on having Rice available for the upcoming fixture at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. England‘s defensive options have been affected by injuries to other players. Reece James and Jarell Quansah are currently sidelined, with James having started England‘s first two matches before a hamstring issue ruled him out of subsequent games. Quansah, who deputised at right-back against Panama, was forced off due to an ankle injury and also missed the last-32 victory.

Tuchel provided an update on the recovery of James and Quansah, noting that both are making good progress and are nearing a return. He mentioned that Quansah is slightly ahead in his recovery compared to James. The team also lost Tino Livramento to a calf injury before the tournament began. The potential return of James and Quansah could offer more defensive stability for England as they progress in the competition.

Mexico, the co-hosts, have demonstrated strong form, securing four wins from four matches without conceding a goal. Their 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the last 32 marked their first knockout stage win in a World Cup in 40 years. Mexico has a notable record at Estadio Azteca, remaining unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches played there, with eight wins and two draws. The upcoming match against England will be held at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday.

Portugal secures World Cup last 16 spot

Portugal advanced to the World Cup last 16 after a dramatic victory against Croatia in Toronto. The match saw Gonçalo Ramos score the winning goal in added time, following a wild finish that included multiple VAR interventions.

The game was billed as a significant occasion for two footballing icons, Luka Modrić and Cristiano Ronaldo. Modrić, at 40, played in what is likely his final World Cup, while Ronaldo continues in the tournament. Both players scored during a match filled with incidents, though neither was the most influential on the pitch. Instead, the contest was characterized by a hard-fought battle between two determined teams, with momentum shifting frequently.

The atmosphere in the stadium was lively after a hot day in Toronto. Portugal largely controlled the first half, creating several opportunities. An early chance came when Rafael Leão drove down the left wing and delivered a low cut-back to Bruno Fernandes, whose two shots were saved by Dominik Livaković and blocked by the defense.

Pedro Neto was a persistent threat for Portugal in the initial period, particularly in his duel with Ivan Perišić, who was playing at full-back for Croatia. Neto consistently delivered whipped crosses into the box, though they remained unrewarded. One such cross saw Livaković miss the ball, but it also eluded Ronaldo. Another cross around the half-hour mark saw both Ronaldo and Fernandes stretch to connect at the far post, but they were just too late.

Croatia’s second-half surge and VAR drama

Croatia concluded the first half content, despite being on the defensive. They confidently withstood Portugal‘s attacks, maintained a strong presence in midfield, and aimed to isolate Martin Baturina against João Cancelo to deliver crosses for Ante Budimir. This strategy was not overly successful, partly due to the physical attention from Rúben Dias.

At half-time, Zlatko Dalić replaced Budimir with Igor Matanović, and Croatia‘s performance immediately shifted. They took the initiative, while Portugal‘s intensity waned. Eight minutes into the second half, Croatia took the lead. Josep Stanišić delivered a cross from the right that bypassed everyone until Perišić emerged at the back post, controlled the ball, and drove it low past Diogo Costa.

Following their goal, Croatia briefly dominated. Petar Sučić found Matanović in the box, who scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside. In the 59th minute, Sučić himself cut in from the left and unleashed a powerful shot that Costa saved with his legs.

During this period, Leão struck the Croatian bar from 25 yards, and a Ronaldo goal was ruled out for offside. The game then saw a moment of assistance for Portugal when Livaković mishandled a backpass, conceding a corner. The subsequent corner led to a VAR review, where Nikola Vlašić was found to have held Leão. The Norwegian referee, Espen Eskås, was sent to the monitor, and a penalty was awarded.

Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to take the penalty, converting it to level the score. This marked his first ever World Cup knockout-stage goal, and at 41, he became the oldest player to score in the World Cup knockouts, surpassing his former teammate Pepe, who scored at 39 years and nine months. His penalty came shortly after an earlier goal was disallowed for offside. This action may have influenced manager Roberto Martínez‘s decision not to substitute him at that moment, despite earlier considerations.

Portugal was back in the game, but the dynamic remained challenging. Croatia appeared superior and had further chances, including two long-range efforts from Mateo Kovačić and a saved shot from Matanović. Sučić also had another goal disallowed for offside. Ronaldo was eventually substituted for Rúben Neves with 10 minutes remaining, a move that indicated Martínez’s assessment of the match.

Ronaldo was eventually substituted by Roberto Martinez Credit: independent.co.uk

The substitution proved effective, as Portugal tightened their defense and began to control possession in the final stages. Play was repeatedly directed to Leão, who ultimately delivered the decisive contribution. His cross was flicked into the net by Gonçalo Ramos, securing Portugal‘s place in the last 16. The celebrations for the goal were extensive, leading the referee to add three extra minutes to stoppage time.

Gonçalo Ramos’s goal lifted Portugal over Croatia for a place in the World Cup last 16.Photograph: Jeenah Moon Credit: theguardian.com

In the final moments, Croatia believed they had found an equalizer, but VAR once again intervened, ruling out Joško Gvardiol‘s goal for offside due to a slight touch from Matanović. This decision sparked protests, with plastic bottles thrown onto the pitch, but the outcome remained unchanged. Portugal will now face Spain in the last-16 tie, following Spain‘s 3-0 victory over Austria.

Kane’s Impactful Performance

Harry Kane delivered a decisive performance for England, securing a 2-1 victory over DR Congo in a World Cup knockout match. His two goals were crucial in overturning an early deficit, preventing a potential upset. Declan Rice described Kane as “inevitable” following the win, highlighting his consistent ability to influence games.

The first goal, an equaliser, showcased Kane’s individual striker instincts, as he capitalised on a moment of space to convert Anthony Gordon’s cross. The second goal, however, demonstrated a different aspect of his play. Instead of a quick shot, Kane took control, navigating through defenders to strike the ball into the net. This emphatic finish reflected a strong will to bend the game to his team’s advantage.

Manager Thomas Tuchel noted that he never considered substituting Kane, acknowledging the striker’s overall effectiveness. Tuchel also indicated that this tournament sees Kane in his best form since the 2018 World Cup, with teammates reportedly impressed by his work ethic. One source mentioned that England finally has a fully fit Kane at a major tournament.

Beyond Goalscoring: Leadership and Mentality

Kane’s influence extends beyond his goalscoring prowess. His resilience and capability are seen as reasons for the team’s trust in him. This is attributed not only to his physical condition but also to a strengthened psychological element, possibly bolstered by recent trophy wins with Bayern Munich, which has eroded previous doubts.

During the match against DR Congo, as England trailed for an extended period, Kane displayed composure and leadership. He was one of four players in the squad who had experienced a significant past defeat, and he used this experience to encourage his younger teammates to remain focused. After the victory, he urged them to enjoy the moment, emphasizing the importance of spirit forged in adversity.

Kane also maintains a strong personal drive, attuned to the performances of other top strikers like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. Tuchel described players like Kane as “sharks,” driven by a competitive instinct. This mentality is not only present within the England squad but is also seen as a key factor in Kane’s ability to decide games and propel England’s World Cup campaign.

England’s World Cup Journey Continues

The victory against DR Congo secured England’s progression to the next stage of the tournament. They are scheduled to face co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca for a place in the quarter-finals. Kane has urged his teammates not to take their World Cup journey for granted, highlighting the hard work put into the group stage.

Kane continues to set new records in his career. His goal against Panama took him past Gary Lineker as England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer. He has accumulated three goals in this tournament, adding to his six goals in 2018 and two in 2022. This marks his 117th appearance for England.

The team’s preparation for knockout football, including potential penalty shootouts, is being taken seriously. Noni Madueke confirmed that all phases of play are being addressed with the highest level of attention as the tournament progresses.

Everton have officially completed the signing of midfielder Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough. The deal for Hackney, who was named the Championship Player of the Season, could reach £25m. He has committed to a five-year contract with the Merseyside club.

The initial fee for Hackney is £16.5m, with potential add-ons that could increase it to £25m. These add-ons include clauses related to Hackney playing for England. Middlesbrough had previously rejected several bids for the player, holding out for their valuation as he had only 12 months remaining on his contract.

Hackney expressed his enthusiasm for joining Everton, stating that once he knew of the club’s interest and spoke with the manager, it was always his preferred destination. He highlighted the club’s size, its new stadium, and its future direction as key factors in his decision. The midfielder also noted manager David Moyes’ track record of successfully bringing players from the Championship to the Premier League.

He described himself as a player who offers a bit of everything, both attacking and defensively. Hackney mentioned his ability to carry the ball, make late runs into the box, and hopefully score goals. He acknowledged that he has not yet played in the Premier League but believes he can develop further once he adapts to the top flight.

Hayden Hackney, who was named player of the season in the Championship, has signed for Everton from Middlesbrough.Photograph: Everton FC Credit: theguardian.com

David Moyes commented on Hackney’s arrival, calling him a promising young player who the club had been monitoring for some time. Moyes emphasised the club’s history of identifying talented players in the Championship who have gone on to become valuable assets. He hopes Hackney will follow this trend.

Moyes also noted that Hackney is an England Under-21 international and will enhance competition in the midfield, which was a priority for the upcoming season. Hackney was part of the England team that won the European Under-21 Championship in 2025.

Tottenham’s record signing

In other transfer news, Tottenham have confirmed the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham. The deal is valued at £85m, marking a club record for Tottenham.

Fernandes, a Portugal international, began his career at Sporting and spent a season at Southampton in 2024-25 before joining West Ham in August of the previous year.

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi praised Fernandes, highlighting his combination of quality on the ball, intensity, and intelligence, which aligns with the team’s playing style. De Zerbi also noted Fernandes’ existing experience and consistent performance in the Premier League despite his age.

Fernandes expressed his excitement for this new chapter, calling Spurs a massive club. He stated that his conversations with De Zerbi were a key reason for his decision to join, as they share a similar vision for football, focusing on being a strong, combative, and energetic team aiming to win every game.

De Zerbi further added that Fernandes is comfortable under pressure, capable of progressing the ball, works diligently for the team, and possesses the courage to influence difficult situations. He believes Tottenham provides an ideal environment for Fernandes’ continued development and looks forward to working with him.

Hackney’s move to Everton was completed before the start of pre-season, allowing him to integrate with the squad from day one.

By Lucy Ashby — 2 July 2026 — 4 min read

Marcus Rashford is anticipated to rejoin Manchester United this summer following loan periods with Barcelona and Aston Villa. The 28-year-old forward’s potential return to Old Trafford has sparked discussions among current and former players, as well as within the club’s hierarchy.

During his loan spell in Spain, Rashford achieved a successful season, contributing significantly to Barcelona‘s La Liga triumph. He recorded 14 goals and 14 assists across all competitions. Despite his strong performance, Barcelona opted to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for £70 million, leaving Rashford’s future with the Catalan club uncertain.

Rashford’s relationship with Manchester United had reportedly deteriorated under former manager Ruben Amorim, particularly after the player expressed a desire for a “new challenge.” These comments, made shortly after a derby victory against Manchester City in December 2024, reportedly caused upset among some United players, who viewed them as a transfer request after being dropped for a single game.

Squad and Club Perspectives on Rashford’s Return

Harry Maguire, a long-standing teammate, has voiced support for Rashford’s return, suggesting he should be given an opportunity under newly appointed head coach Michael Carrick. Maguire stated that he has a strong relationship with Rashford and acknowledges his capabilities as a player. He emphasised that any return would need to be mutually agreeable for both the player and the club, ensuring Rashford is happy and confident.

In contrast, former United player Paul Scholes previously called for Rashford to be “banished” from the club due to his attitude and behaviour. Scholes suggested that Rashford’s actions indicated a reluctance to be involved, potentially setting a negative example for younger players.

Despite the differing opinions, Rashford remains under contract with Manchester United for another two years. He is expected to return for pre-season training at Carrington after England‘s World Cup campaign concludes, provided no transfer developments occur.

Sources close to Rashford indicate that he is open to re-establishing himself at United, where he believes he has unfulfilled ambitions. He reportedly does not wish to play for another Premier League club, despite interest from teams like Tottenham.

Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford Credit: manchestereveningnews.co.uk

However, the club’s leadership, specifically Ineos, has expressed reservations about paying Rashford’s substantial wages. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has identified the wage bill as a priority for reduction, with other high earners like Jadon Sancho and Casemiro having already departed. While United would ideally sell Rashford to generate funds for squad investment, their reluctance to cover his wages reportedly weakens their position in the transfer market.

Transfer Strategy and Future Plans

With two years remaining on his contract, clubs may be hesitant to spend on a player with such an expensive deal, making it difficult to negotiate a lower wage structure. This situation could encourage major European clubs, such as Barcelona and Bayern Munich, to consider loan enquiries for Rashford.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-303" src="https://newsgb.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/inline_gn-1b60e8d17511_img-5.webp" alt="England's Marcus Rashford (11) gestures during the World Cup Group L soccer match between England and Ghana in Foxborough, Mass., near Boston, Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The club’s transfer strategy has also been impacted by other factors. The serious injury to Manuel Ugarte during the World Cup has left Kobbie Mainoo and the incoming Ederson as the primary senior midfielders. United had initially planned to sell Ugarte to fund other areas of the team, but his injury has altered these plans. Consequently, the club may not pursue another left-winger as originally intended, potentially opening a path for Rashford’s reintegration.

Positive discussions between Rashford’s representatives and the club have laid the groundwork for his return to pre-season. It has been agreed that he will be part of the first-team squad and could feature in some of United‘s six pre-season friendlies. The club is understood to be looking to strengthen on the left, with players like Iliman Ndiaye of Everton and Crysencio Summerville of West Ham considered as options. However, these plans might be shelved if Rashford remains at the club, allowing funds to be reallocated to strengthen the midfield.

Paul Scholes Credit: manchestereveningnews.co.uk

The club’s transfer window has been relatively quiet, partly due to wage demands. For instance, United were unwilling to match the reported salary offered by Tottenham for midfielder Mateus Fernandes. Adam Scott from Bournemouth is another target, but his potential fee is also a consideration for United. Sandro Tonali is a midfield option, though Manchester City is expected to pursue the Italian player.

Controversial Red Card Incident

Folarin Balogun, the USA striker, received a controversial red card following a VAR review during his side’s World Cup victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred midway through the second half, leaving Balogun visibly shocked.

The play involved Balogun and Tarik Muharemovic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where their legs tangled while contesting the ball. Replays, shown in super-slow motion, depicted Balogun’s leg scraping down the calf of the Bosnian defender. Initially, Brazilian referee Raphael Claus did not award a free-kick, but after both players were injured and play halted, VAR officials directed Claus to the pitchside monitor. Upon reviewing the incident, the red card was promptly issued.

The decision quickly drew comparisons from fans and pundits to an unpunished challenge by Lionel Messi in Argentina’s opening match against Algeria, where the Argentine captain did not receive a card. Former England women’s striker Sue Smith commented on Balogun’s incident, stating that while the replay in slow motion might suggest a red card, watching it in real-time makes the decision seem harsh. Smith suggested Balogun was attempting to protect the ball and plant his foot, and the unfortunate placement led to the contact.

The sending off meant the US team had to play the remaining 25 minutes with ten men. Despite this numerical disadvantage, Malik Tillman’s free-kick secured the victory with eight minutes left in the match.

USA Secures Last 16 Spot

The US team overcame the controversial red card and a gritty performance from Bosnia and Herzegovina to secure a 2-0 win, propelling them into the World Cup last 16. The victory was sealed by Tillman’s magnificently placed free-kick from the edge of the box.

The match saw moments of disbelief from the US camp, including Weston McKennie’s reaction and coach Mauricio Pochettino’s incredulous gestures. Pochettino expressed pride in his players after the game, highlighting the team’s resilience.

The win marks a significant achievement for the US men’s national team, placing them in a conversation not seen since 2002, when Bruce Arena’s squad reached the quarter-finals. This hard-earned victory and the team’s steely demeanor have made them a national topic of discussion in the US.

The match was played in front of a sold-out, pro-US crowd at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. The fans were treated to bright moments early in the game, though an early goal, which had been a feature of previous US matches in the tournament, did not materialise immediately.

In the fourth minute, Christian Pulisic created an early danger, cutting in from the left and firing a shot that was blocked by Stjepan Radeljić. Pulisic later commented on the team’s performance, stating that they had to “dig deep” and that the red card incident demonstrated the team’s strength.

Bosnia and Herzegovina also had their chances, forcing an awkward save from Matt Freese early on and an audacious attempt at an Olimpico by Kerim Alajbegović, which Freese managed to keep out.

Match Progression and Key Moments

During the first-half hydration break, the atmosphere in the stadium was enhanced by the psychedelic rock band Rising Rhythm, playing a repeated riff. The US team matched this commitment with a physical first half. Sergiño Dest made runs behind the Bosnia and Herzegovina defence, and McKennie continued to find space, while Balogun remained a threat.

Balogun initially thought he had scored after 32 minutes when Dest’s pressure led to McKennie finding Balogun, who applied an expert finish. However, the goal was disallowed due to Balogun being marginally offside, serving as a warning shot to the opposition.

The breakthrough for the US finally came just before half-time. Tim Ream initiated the play by getting to an underhit clearance. Ream opted for a first-time knock to McKennie, who then executed a dummy for Tillman. The ball was deflected and caught under Muharemovic’s foot, but Balogun was alert and finished, with the goal counting this time.

Balogun had another opportunity for a second goal shortly after, following a combination play where McKennie found Dest with a lofted pass over the defence. Dest’s header across goal was met by Balogun, but the ball hit the top of the crossbar and went out of play.

The US defence might have felt a reprieve when Edin Džeko was forced off with an injury after 50 minutes. However, their challenges soon escalated with Balogun’s red card incident in the 64th minute.

Following the red card, the US defence had to be fully committed as Bosnia and Herzegovina showed increased intensity with their numerical advantage. Despite this, the US maintained pressure, leading to Dest earning a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. Tillman then stepped up and delivered a dipping effort that went over the wall and under the crossbar, bringing palpable relief to his team.

Balogun will face a minimum one-match suspension for serious foul play. There is also the possibility of an extended ban if the FIFA disciplinary committee deems it necessary, as per FIFA’s disciplinary code, which offers no grounds for appeal in such cases.

The US team is now set to face Belgium in the last 16 on Monday in Seattle, Washington.

By Lucy Ashby — 1 July 2026 — 3 min read

Germany exited the World Cup at the Round of 32 stage after a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay. The match, held in Boston, saw Germany have an extra-time goal disallowed, which would have given them a 2-1 lead. The decision by the video assistant referee (VAR) led to the game ending 1-1 after both normal and extra time, with Paraguay ultimately securing a 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout.

The disallowed goal came from Jonathan Tah, who believed he had put Germany ahead. However, VAR intervened, and referee Jalal Jayed ruled out the goal. The reason given was that Waldemar Anton was judged to have fouled Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. This incident proved pivotal, as Paraguay then advanced to the last 16.

Fifa’s Explanation and Coach’s Reaction

Following the match, Fifa clarified the decision, stating that coaches and players had been informed prior to the World Cup about how such fouls would be penalised. Pierluigi Collina, chairman of Fifa‘s referees committee, explained that officials were instructed to punish incidents where players attempt to block opponents without making an attempt to play the ball, particularly when goalkeepers are involved.

Collina elaborated that while maintaining a position is not inherently a foul, a deliberate movement by an attacking player with the clear intention of obstructing an opponent’s movement and preventing them from defending should be penalised. He emphasised that this is especially pertinent when the tactic aims to prevent the opposing goalkeeper from defending the goal, and that the information provided to teams meant such decisions should not be a surprise.

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed his disagreement with the decision, stating, "In my opinion, this foul was not a real foul; it was actually a joke that his goal was disallowed." This defeat marked Germany‘s first loss in a World Cup penalty shootout as four-time winners of the tournament.

The penalty shootout saw Jonathan Tah miss his spot-kick, firing it over the bar, which allowed Jose Canale to score the decisive kick for Paraguay. This outcome meant Germany‘s campaign concluded at the Round of 32.

Germany’s Performance and Nagelsmann’s Future

Florian Wirtz, who featured for Germany for 110 minutes of the tie, provided an assist during the match. Paraguay initially took the lead through Julio Enciso‘s header before half-time. Germany equalised in the 54th minute when Wirtz‘s delivery from deep into the area led to Kai Havertz scoring with a header.

Despite the elimination, Julian Nagelsmann stated he would not be resigning from his position as head coach. He affirmed his commitment, saying, "I am not someone who runs away." Nagelsmann indicated that he had already spoken with officials from the German FA, who had offered comfort rather than discussing contract extensions immediately after the defeat.

Nagelsmann acknowledged that public opinion in Germany might not be positive towards him following the exit. He reflected on the team’s performance, noting that they had not done much in the tournament to warrant celebration and found it difficult against an "ultra-defensive" Paraguay side. He described the exit as "very bitter" when considering the opponent.

For Paraguay, the victory was a significant achievement. Their president declared a national holiday following the win. The team’s head coach, Gustavo Alfaro, praised his squad, referring to them as "26 warriors," and spoke about the importance of football for the nation. Paraguay will now proceed to face two-time champions France in the last 16. This match is scheduled to take place in Philadelphia on Saturday at 22:00 BST.

The match between Paraguay and France is set to be a significant event, occurring on 4 July, Independence Day, in Philadelphia, a city historically linked to the Declaration of Independence. This fixture marks Paraguay‘s progression in the tournament after their victory over Germany.

France advances to last 16

France secured their place in the World Cup round of 16 after a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden. The match, held in New Jersey, saw goals from Kylian Mbappe, who scored twice, and Bradley Barcola. This win sets up a clash with Paraguay in Philadelphia on Saturday, 4 July.

The team’s performance against Sweden was marked by a strong display of unity and skill. Mbappe‘s opening goal was followed by a moment of solidarity as he ran to embrace coach Didier Deschamps, who had recently returned from attending his mother’s funeral. This emotional reunion was joined by the rest of the team, highlighting a strong collective spirit.

Deschamps acknowledged the team’s unity, stating that while team spirit alone does not guarantee wins, its absence can lead to losses. Midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni echoed this sentiment, noting the team’s effort to support their coach during a difficult time. This collective strength was evident as France delivered a performance that left many observers impressed.

Dominant performances and key players

Kylian Mbappe was a central figure in France‘s victory, scoring his fifth and sixth goals of the tournament. His performance brought him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. Mbappe‘s overall World Cup goal tally now stands at 18, placing him one goal behind Messi for the all-time record in the competition.

Another standout player was Michael Olise, who provided two assists in the match, bringing his tournament total to five. This makes him the first player since 1994 to achieve five or more assists in a single World Cup. Olise‘s contributions were praised by Deschamps, who described him as a major influence and a crucial link between the strikers and defence.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-272" src="https://newsgb.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/inline_gn-49cd125ab2fb_img-9.webp" alt="30 June 2026, USA, East Rutherford: Soccer, Men, 2026 World Cup, France vs. Sweden, Knockout Stage, Round of 32, New York -New Jersey Stadium, Bradley Barcola (right, France) celebrates his goal to make it 2-0 with Ousmane Demb..l..
The attacking prowess of France was further demonstrated by the combination play between Ousmane Dembele and Mbappe, who have collectively been involved in six goals in the United States. This duo has assisted each other four times for Dembele to Mbappe and twice for Mbappe to Dembele, a record for any duo since 1966 in the competition. Bradley Barcola also contributed significantly, scoring France‘s second goal.

The team’s offensive strength has been consistently high, with France becoming the first team in World Cup history to score three or more goals in five consecutive matches. Former players like Ian Wright and Patrick Vieira have highlighted France as the team to beat, with Gary Neville noting their precision and devastation. Sweden‘s coach, Graham Potter, admitted he had not seen a better team.

Looking ahead to Paraguay

Following their dominant win, France will now face Paraguay in the round of 16. Paraguay emerged as a surprise opponent after defeating Germany. The match is scheduled for Saturday, 4 July, in Philadelphia.

Despite the team’s strong form, Didier Deschamps urged caution, emphasizing the need to remain calm and focused. When asked about the team’s chances of going all the way, he stated, “Please, slow down.” He highlighted that while they have reached the round of 16, there is always room for improvement and the opposition will only get stronger.

Image:Kylian Mbappe celebrated with manager Didier Deschamps as the France boss returned to the dugout on Tuesday Credit: skysports.com

The French squad’s professional approach was evident even after their victory against Sweden. While fans celebrated, the players maintained a composed demeanor, acknowledging the win but understanding that the tournament journey is far from over. This measured response reflects their determination to continue raising their standards as they progress.

Should France overcome Paraguay, they would advance to the quarter-finals to play the winner of the match between co-hosts Canada and Morocco. That potential quarter-final fixture would take place in Boston Stadium on Thursday, 9 July.

Williams’ return to Centre Court

Serena Williams made her return to Wimbledon‘s singles draw, facing Maya Joint in a match that saw the 44-year-old American narrowly defeated in three sets. The match marked Williams’ first singles appearance at the tournament in four years, following her last outing at the All England Club against Harmony Tan.

Williams received a warm reception as she stepped onto Centre Court, a venue where she has previously secured seven singles titles and six women’s doubles titles. Her return came 1,462 days after her last point at the club, demonstrating a resilient spirit by saving a match point and pushing the contest to a deciding set against an opponent 24 years her junior.

Despite the crowd’s support, Australia’s Joint maintained her composure to secure a 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 victory. Following the match, Williams congratulated Joint at the net and acknowledged the ovation from the crowd as she exited the court.

Serena Williams made a sentimental return to Wimbledon.Photograph: Robert Prange/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Joint’s perspective on the match

Maya Joint expressed her disbelief and excitement after her win against Serena Williams. In her on-court interview, Joint mentioned her difficulty sleeping the night before the match, staying awake until 2am contemplating the upcoming game. She described feeling overwhelmed upon entering the court, noting that her legs were not moving as she had forgotten her warm-up routine.

Joint, who had experienced a series of 11 consecutive losses at WTA Tour-level matches prior to this encounter, delivered what was described as her best performance of the season under significant pressure. She acknowledged Williams’ legendary status and the aura she brings to the court, stating that she had dreamt of such a moment since childhood.

The 20-year-old Joint’s victory marks her first win at Wimbledon, a significant milestone in her career. Her performance against one of the sport’s icons highlighted her ambition and determination to compete at the highest level.

Williams’ reflections and future plans

Serena Williams opted not to hold a mandatory post-match news conference, instead releasing a statement about her return. She conveyed her enjoyment of being back at Wimbledon, an experience she had not anticipated. Williams described the atmosphere and walking out onto the court as amazing, stating that she relished and missed the moment, enjoying it more than anything else.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion had made her competitive return to women’s doubles earlier in the month, nearly four years after indicating she was stepping away from the sport. She had shown glimpses of her previous form alongside Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko at Queen’s and with Karolina Muchova in Berlin, though questions remained about her physical readiness for singles play.

By returning, Williams became the second oldest player to participate in the women’s singles draw at Wimbledon. Her initial struggles in the opening set, particularly in baseline rallies against Joint’s powerful down-the-line winners, suggested that her time away from the sport had taken a toll. However, she gradually improved, battling back from a break down twice in the second set to force a tie-break.

Williams saved a match point with a powerful forehand winner and a 120mph serve, delighting the Centre Court crowd by extending the match. This effort, however, appeared to come at a cost, as she was unable to maintain the pace with Joint in the deciding set. Williams’ motivation for her comeback reportedly included the desire for her two daughters, Olympia, who is eight, and Adira, who is almost three, to watch her play. Both daughters, along with her husband Alexis Ohanian and sister Venus, were present in her players’ box.

The Williams sisters are scheduled to compete together in the doubles draw later this week. The pair, who have won six doubles titles at Wimbledon, are set to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in their first-round match.
