Tottenham have reached an agreement to sign Mateus Fernandes, the Portugal midfielder from West Ham, in a deal valued at £85m. This transfer fee, which is guaranteed without additional clauses, surpasses the club’s previous record transfer of £65m paid for Dominic Solanke in August 2024. Fernandes has been granted permission to undergo a medical examination with Spurs.
The 21-year-old midfielder was a key target for Tottenham, particularly after their £80m offer for Sandro Tonali was not accepted by Newcastle. Tottenham has been active in the transfer market this summer, having already secured four other players. This includes the signing of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer, set to finalise once his contract with Burnley concludes on 1 July. Other defensive reinforcements include Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, both arriving on free transfers from Bournemouth and Liverpool respectively, alongside Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke, acquired for £52m from Brighton.
Competition for Fernandes
Manchester United also pursued Fernandes, but ultimately withdrew from the deal. They maintained a stance of acquiring players at what they consider to be the appropriate valuation and were not convinced of Fernandes’ strong desire to play for their club. United were unwilling to match the £85m offer made by Spurs for the midfielder. Last season, United believed their patient approach in the transfer market was successful, leading to the acquisition of players at favourable prices.
Despite experiencing consecutive relegations from the Premier League, Fernandes attracted significant interest this summer, with Manchester United and Paris St-Germain both showing interest. His agent, Jorge Mendes, engaged in discussions with both Tottenham and Manchester United regarding his future. West Ham officials reportedly view Fernandes as one of the top young talents in the Premier League from the previous season, with potential to reach the level of Declan Rice, who moved to Arsenal for £105m in 2023.

Tottenham’s determination to secure Fernandes was evident, with reports indicating they were prepared to match any offer from Manchester United. This aggressive approach in the transfer market follows Spurs missing out on several key targets last summer, including Bryan Mbeumo, who joined United. This has reportedly fuelled the club’s desire for a significant signing in the current window.
Player Profile and Impact
Fernandes’ playing style is characterised by his strong tackling ability and high-intensity running. According to Simon Rusk, who previously worked with Fernandes at Southampton, his tackling statistics are notably high, a feature that was anticipated to be a strength in his game. He is also recognised among the top 10 Premier League midfielders for distance covered during matches.
Initially, at Southampton, Fernandes was considered for a more advanced, number 10 role by then-manager Russell Martin. However, Fernandes himself expressed a preference for an all-round midfield position, specifically a number 8, which aligns with his defensive contributions and desire to be extensively involved in the game. His performances at West Ham last season demonstrated an advancement in his game intelligence, complementing his existing strength, tenacity, and stamina. West Ham utilised him primarily as a hybrid option, operating between a number 6 and a number 8 role.

Manchester United’s focus remains on strengthening their central midfield. They have already agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta for Ederson, though his arrival has been postponed due to a late call-up to the Brazil World Cup squad. United’s players are scheduled to return for pre-season training on 9 July. As of now, apart from Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, whose contracts have expired, Michael Carrick’s squad largely mirrors its composition at the end of the previous season, with no significant departures or new additions. Plans to sell Manuel Ugarte have been put on hold following a serious injury he sustained while on World Cup duty with Uruguay.
Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee remains with the club, and rumours concerning the departure of midfielder Mason Mount have been dismissed by sources. The agreement for Fernandes marks a significant move for Tottenham in the current transfer window.
