Boston Stadium sees Jude Bellingham in heated exchange with Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz

World Cup 2026: Silly tackle, bad reaction - Jude Bellingham in row with Carlos Queiroz

Tensions rise during England-Ghana draw

England midfielder Jude Bellingham was involved in a heated exchange with Ghana manager Carlos Queiroz during half-time of Tuesday’s goalless draw at Boston Stadium. The incident occurred shortly after Bellingham committed a foul, shoving Jerome Opoku, which led to tensions spilling over as the referee blew for half-time. Bellingham had to be separated from Queiroz and his coaching staff by teammate Morgan Rogers as players and coaches made their way to the tunnel.

England manager Thomas Tuchel defended Bellingham’s actions, stating, “It was an exchange of emotions, and Jude stood up for himself and his team.” Tuchel acknowledged that emotions are part of the game but emphasised the need to avoid distractions. Queiroz, however, commented that Bellingham “had a bad reaction with some bad names and that’s why the story started.” No cards were issued during the incident, and tensions appeared to subside by the time the second half commenced.

Bellingham later downplayed the confrontation, describing his initial tackle as “silly.” He explained, “I was trying to win the ball, and I followed through a little bit and caught the lad.” He added that Ghana’s bench reacted strongly, attempting to get him a yellow card. Bellingham recognised Queiroz from his time at Manchester United, expressing respect and attributing the exchange to a “competitive edge for both of us.”

England’s struggle to break down Ghana’s defence

The goalless draw marked England’s second consecutive draw in a major tournament, prolonging their wait to secure a spot in the World Cup knockout rounds. Despite dominating statistically, with 18-2 shots and 59% possession, England failed to convert their chances against a resilient Ghana side. Bellingham described the outcome as “very frustrating,” acknowledging Ghana’s effective defensive strategy.

Ghana’s manager, Carlos Queiroz, had instructed his team to play “compact,” a tactic that midfielder Kwasi Sibo confirmed they followed. Defender Gideon Mensah expressed satisfaction with their combination of tight defending and swift counter-attacks. Bellingham praised Ghana’s defence, stating, “Credit to them. They got exactly out of the game what they played for. Couldn’t quite break them down, even with all the corners, all the possession, all the shots on goal from distance.”

England’s lack of clinical finishing also contributed to the draw. After scoring four goals against Croatia, the team struggled to get shots on target against Ghana. The first on-target attempt came in the 57th minute from Anthony Gordon. Late in the match, Nico O’Reilly hit the crossbar with a header, and Harry Kane sent a follow-up shot over the bar from close range.

Player performances and ongoing scrutiny

Bellingham, at 22, became the youngest England player to reach 50 caps in Boston. He was named player of the match against Ghana, a decision he humbly disagreed with, stating, “I didn’t deserve it, to be honest. It probably should’ve gone to one of their lads who defended so well.” He added that he “couldn’t get in the game” despite having a couple of moments.

His place in England’s starting XI was not guaranteed before the World Cup, with Tuchel previously stating Bellingham had to fight for his position. The relationship between Bellingham and Tuchel has been under scrutiny, with Tuchel having previously described Bellingham’s on-field behaviour as “repulsive” during a defeat by Senegal last June, a remark he later apologised for. In November, Tuchel also indicated he would “review” Bellingham’s behaviour following his reaction to a substitution during a qualifier against Albania.

The draw keeps England at the top of Group L. They are guaranteed to qualify for the last 32 if they avoid defeat against Panama on Saturday in New York.
