Dramatic Victory in Jeddah
Anthony Joshua secured a dramatic victory against Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, recovering from two first-round knockdowns to stop his opponent in the second round. The fight marked Joshua’s return to the ring following a car crash in Nigeria in December that resulted in the deaths of his friends, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.
The British heavyweight, aged 36, was sent to the canvas twice in the opening round. The first knockdown occurred within the initial 20 seconds after an uppercut from Prenga. He was knocked down again later in the same round, leading to speculation about a potential upset.

Despite the challenging start, Joshua regrouped in the second round. He unleashed a series of right hands, with a final shot sending Prenga down and prompting the referee to halt the contest. This win improved Joshua’s record to 30-4.
Emotional Return and Tribute
Joshua’s return was an emotional one, with tributes to his late friends visible throughout the event. He carried their names on his chest and the canvas also bore their names alongside the words ‘My Brother’s Keeper’. He walked to the ring accompanied by his entire team, in a show of unity.

Reflecting on the fight, Joshua stated, “It’s more than punch power. That was spirit, that was Latz, that was Sina, that was the families. It hurts to even talk about it. It has been tough.” He briefly stepped away from the microphone before adding, “It’s my brothers. I don’t want to talk about it.”
Prenga, aged 35, suffered his second career loss. He arrived with a record of 20 victories, all by knockout, but had a limited profile among boxing enthusiasts. Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, was seen barking instructions from ringside as the drama unfolded.
Path to a Future Fight
This victory sets the stage for a highly anticipated fight between Joshua and fellow Briton Tyson Fury. Contracts for this bout have been signed, though the specific venue and date remain unconfirmed. The fight, which has been over a decade in the making, is understood to be agreed for November.
There was speculation that Fury might attend the fight in Jeddah, despite his earlier insistence that he would not be present. Fury’s manager, Spencer Brown, indicated that the ‘Gypsy King’ would be “there in spirit.” Fury had secured his own warm-up win against Mariusz Wach, aged 46, in Thailand approximately 24 hours prior to Joshua’s fight.
Joshua expressed his thoughts on the prospect of fighting Fury, saying, “I respect everything he has done and everything that he has achieved, but as a fighting person, we’re here now. I hope the fans will be in for a lovely treat.” The bout is expected to stream on Netflix. While British fans hope for a homecoming event, organizers and broadcasters reportedly favor a venue in the United States to cater to American audiences.
Hearn commented on the significance of Joshua’s performance, stating, “But tonight wasn’t about Tyson Fury. It was about the strength Anthony Joshua has shown just to be here. No-one knows what he’s been through over the last seven months. When he went down in the first round, I thought he’d come back too soon.”
