Manchester United are reportedly in discussions to sign midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The potential transfer involves a fee in the region of £36m, with reports indicating that United are prepared to trigger a release clause in Tielemans’ contract.
Discussions are said to be progressing quickly, particularly after Belgium‘s recent exit from the World Cup. Tielemans is reportedly already en route to Manchester for routine medical examinations, which are expected to begin on Tuesday before a long-term contract is signed.
Midfield Reinforcement Efforts
United’s pursuit of Tielemans comes as part of their efforts to strengthen their midfield. The club has already completed the signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea. However, a move for Atalanta‘s Ederson, which had an initial agreement for £38m, faced complications due to a medical issue. While the deal for Ederson will not proceed on the initial price and structure, United have not ruled out revisiting the transfer before the window closes.
The acquisition of Tielemans would mark the second midfield addition for Michael Carrick‘s team this summer. Santos has already put pen to paper on a five-year contract. Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, highlighted Santos’s technical qualities and leadership abilities, noting his potential for further development.

Tielemans joined Aston Villa in 2023 on a free transfer from Leicester. During his time at Villa, he has made 134 appearances and scored 10 times. Tielemans opened the scoring in the Europa League final against Freiburg.

Tielemans’ experience, including 579 career appearances at club level, and his composure in possession are seen as valuable assets for United.
