Manchester City‘s new manager, Enzo Maresca, recently held his first news conference, addressing his new role and the futures of several key players. Maresca acknowledged the challenge of succeeding Pep Guardiola, who led the club for a decade.
Maresca began by paying tribute to former City manager Kevin Keegan, who passed away earlier in the week. He described taking over from Guardiola as a ‘privilege’ and recognised the significant task ahead, noting that the history of managers with long tenures at the same club often presents a challenge for their successors.
Player Updates and Squad Plans
Regarding player movements, Maresca confirmed that Rodri, who has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium, is scheduled for surgery next week for a back problem. The manager stated that Rodri would be ‘back with us’ after his recovery. Maresca expressed that he does not wish to lose Rodri, who has one year remaining on his current terms.
Maresca was also asked about the futures of Jack Grealish and James Trafford but did not provide a clear indication of their plans. He mentioned that he is currently working with many young players, finding them to be full of energy and noting the quality of some. The remaining group of players is expected to join the squad before the Community Shield.
The manager also spoke about new additions to the squad, including Elliot Anderson, acquired from Nottingham Forest, who is expected to patrol midfield. There is also potential interest in Lille‘s Ayyoub Bouaddi, who featured for Morocco at the World Cup, to further strengthen the midfield. Maresca also retains an interest in Malo Gusto, a right-back he previously worked with at Chelsea. If Omar Marmoush departs, the club intends to enter the market for a similar, pacy forward.
Maresca’s Vision and Pre-Season
Maresca outlined his confidence in his ability to continue the club’s success, referencing the club’s history of stability with only three managers in 17 years. He cited his previous experience at Chelsea, where he believes a great job was done, with a clear team identity and success. His departure from Chelsea involved City paying the west London club compensation.
Maresca’s pre-season schedule includes a tour of Asia, with matches against Inter in Hong Kong, and against K-League All Stars and Atlético Madrid in Seoul. Key players who exited the World Cup early, such as Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, and Abdukodir Khusanov, will join the tour. The manager also mentioned his philosophy of adapting and evolving, noting that set pieces and man-to-man approaches are directions football is heading, and it is a manager’s duty to find solutions.

This event will allow supporters to see new signings in action and hear from the new manager and recruits, as well as familiar faces. Tickets for this special event are priced at £5 for adults and £3 for Under 21s and Over 65s, with sales for Season Ticket Members and Cityzens Official Members beginning on Tuesday 28 July.
The ‘City Are Back’ gates at the Joie Stadium are scheduled to open at 13:30 (UK) on the day of the event, with activities starting at 14:00 (UK).
