Marcus Rashford’s exit clause from Manchester United, which was valued at £40 million, has now expired. This development means that any potential transfer for the player will require direct negotiation between clubs.
Rashford, who is 28 years old, has been representing England in the World Cup. Following the tournament, he is expected to rejoin his teammates for training, particularly those who participated in the later stages of the competition held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Any future approaches for the forward will now be assessed by all involved parties.
Rashford’s Recent Club History
The exit clause that recently expired was not applicable to United’s primary rivals, Manchester City and Liverpool. Reports indicate that Rashford has declined several proposals, some of which offered more favourable financial terms than his current agreement.
His role at Barcelona is now likely to be taken by England teammate Anthony Gordon, who joined the club from Newcastle United.
Rashford is a product of United’s academy, having progressed through their youth system. He has made more than 400 appearances for his boyhood club and has scored 138 goals since his debut in February 2016. However, he has not played for Manchester United since December 2024.
Return to Manchester United and Pre-Season Plans
Marcus Rashford is anticipated to be reintegrated into the Manchester United squad following the World Cup. He is expected to commence the upcoming season as part of Michael Carrick’s team. His last appearance for United was in a Europa League victory against Viktoria Pilzen in December 2024, a period marked by a strained relationship between the player and the club.
Despite past issues with the previous head coach, Ruben Amorim, there are no reported problems between Rashford and Carrick. Rashford is scheduled for a three-week break after England’s World Cup campaign, after which he is planned to return to United for pre-season training.
While United would prefer to reduce their wage expenses, there is a reported lack of suitable clubs interested in acquiring Rashford. He was loaned to Aston Villa in January 2025 before his move to Barcelona for the 2025-26 season. After scoring a goal in Barcelona’s victory against Real Madrid in May, which secured the La Liga title, Rashford reportedly expressed a desire to remain with the Spanish club. However, United has no current plans to consider another temporary move for Rashford to Barcelona.
United’s pre-season schedule includes six friendly matches before the new campaign begins. The first match is against Wrexham in Helsinki on 18 July, the day before the World Cup final. Subsequent fixtures include games against Rosenborg in Trondheim on 24 July, Atlético Madrid in Stockholm on 1 August, Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg on 8 August, Leeds in Dublin on 12 August, and Milan in Wroclaw on 15 August. The Premier League season for United is set to begin a week later with an away match in Hull. Should England reach the World Cup final, the earliest Rashford could return to United would be 10 August.
Michael Carrick was appointed as the permanent head coach in May, having initially taken over as caretaker in January after Amorim’s departure. He led United back into the Champions League with a third-place finish. Carrick has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete at the highest level in the league and for available trophies, stating his anticipation for the upcoming season and European nights at Old Trafford.
United has also reached an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Andrey Santos. The deal for the midfielder includes a sell-on clause for the London club. Santos, who is 22 years old and has six caps for Brazil, can play in both holding and attacking midfield roles. He was not part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad that was eliminated from the World Cup by Norway in the last 16 stage.
Carrick’s midfield options are expected to be further strengthened by the potential arrival of Éderson from Atlanta. The 27-year-old, who came on as a substitute for Brazil in their defeat to Norway, is yet to complete his medical. Carrick is also reportedly interested in adding a third midfielder with more established pedigree, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton being considered.
