Reports suggested he was open to leaving, with Real Madrid mentioned as a potential destination. However, the Spanish club issued a statement denying any intention to sign the midfielder, clarifying that information circulating about their interest did not align with reality and contributed to confusion.

Despite the previous links and Fernandez’s reported openness to a move, the lack of a confirmed alternative destination and a substantial asking price of £120m could influence his future at Chelsea. Alonso’s clear intention to keep him suggests the club is keen to retain his services.

In addition to Fernandez, Alonso provided updates on other players. Striker Nicolas Jackson is set to rejoin the squad for the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia. Jackson’s return follows Bayern Munich’s decision not to make his loan move permanent. Alonso stated, “Nico Jackson is joining the tour in Asia and we are looking forward to him working with us.”

Conversely, winger Alejandro Garnacho has not returned to training with the first-team squad. Alonso confirmed an agreement is in place for Garnacho to remain away while he seeks a move, with Italian club Roma reportedly among those interested. Alonso noted, “We have spoken with the sporting directors and there is interest from him, from other clubs, so let’s see how it develops. He affirmed alignment with the sporting directors regarding the team’s objectives and areas for reinforcement. “The team is good and where we want to reinforce in terms of positions is clear. There are some weeks to go but we are working in a very aligned way – and this is the right way.”

Alonso also addressed the club’s typical target of Champions League qualification. He acknowledged it as a goal, explaining that achieving it requires many things to be done correctly. He expressed his commitment to the process, focusing on how the team plays and approaches each game. “We are ambitious, and at Chelsea you need to share that energy and hunger to succeed.”
