Australia’s dominant performance

Australia maintained their unbeaten streak in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup with a commanding 113-run victory against Pakistan at Headingley. The win further solidified Australia’s position at the top of Group A, creating a significant points gap over India, South Africa, and Bangladesh, all of whom have a game in hand.

The match saw a strong performance from Ellyse Perry, who contributed significantly with both bat and ball. Her efforts were central to Australia’s success on a warm evening.

Perry’s all-round contribution

Ellyse Perry was a standout player, scoring 71 runs off 48 deliveries, including nine fours and one six. She also made an impact with her bowling, taking two wickets for nine runs in her single over, dismissing Muneeba Ali and Aliya Riaz. Perry acknowledged the challenge posed by Pakistan’s intent during the game.

Despite the strong victory, Perry noted that Australia’s batting could have been more refined. She mentioned that the team faced challenges in the first innings and lost wickets consistently at times, suggesting there was room for a more polished performance.

Australia chose to bat first, but the innings began with Beth Mooney being dismissed for a duck. Perry and Georgia Voll then established a 100-run partnership. However, after reaching the century mark, Voll was caught by Iram Javed off a delivery from Nashra Sandhu.

Following Voll’s dismissal, Australia experienced a period where they lost several wickets in quick succession. Sandhu claimed the wicket of Ashleigh Gardner shortly after. Georgia Wareham also departed for five runs, bowled by Rameen Shamim. After losing three wickets for seven runs, Annabel Sutherland joined Perry, adding 27 runs before being caught by Sana, giving Shamim her second wicket.

Further wickets fell, including Perry, who was caught by Muneeba Ali off Fatima Sana‘s bowling, and captain Sophie Molineux, who was dismissed for five runs. Nicola Carey remained unbeaten with 26 runs, and Alana King added five not out to conclude Australia’s innings.

Pakistan’s chase and fielding efforts

In their chase, Pakistan faced early setbacks. Gull Feroza was dismissed following a mix-up with Muneeba Ali, with Voll and Garth combining for the run-out. Molineux, despite a low score with the bat, performed well with the ball, taking the wickets of Saira Jabeen and Nashra Sandhu with an off-spinner.

Molineux also contributed with a crucial piece of fielding, stopping a drive from Ayesha Zafar and enabling Mooney to stump the Pakistan batter. Perry secured her first wicket by dismissing Muneeba Ali, who was caught by Gardner. Perry then claimed her second wicket when Aliya Riaz edged a ball to Mooney behind the stumps.

Pakistan’s innings was marked by three run-outs, which contributed to their struggle. Shamim was run out after a mix-up with the non-striker, involving Voll and Mooney. The team was eventually bowled out for 86 runs, resulting in Australia’s 113-run victory.

Fatima Sana, Pakistan’s captain, expressed the team’s need for more players. Molineux, Australia’s captain, commented on the enjoyable nature of her captaincy when the team delivers such performances, noting that while they have secured strong wins, there are still areas for improvement.

The match concluded with Australia securing their fourth win and Pakistan experiencing their fourth defeat in the tournament.
