Dramatic Draw Sees Egypt Through, Iran Await Fate

Egypt have secured their place in the Round of 32 of the World Cup after a dramatic 1-1 draw against Iran in Group G. The result means Egypt finished second in their group, while Iran must now wait to see if their point is enough to progress as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.

The match, held in Seattle, saw both teams battling intensely, with the scoreline reflecting the closely contested nature of the game. Egypt will now face Australia in the Round of 32 on July 3 at AT&T Stadium near Dallas.

The opening stages of the match were eventful, with both goals arriving within the first 14 minutes. Egypt took the lead early through Mahmoud Saber. His shot, following a save from a Mohamed Salah effort, found its way into the net, making the score 1-0.

Iran responded quickly, with Ramin Rezaeian equalising in the 15th minute. Rezaeian, who was the highest-scoring defender in the game, reacted to a rebound from a Milad Mohammadi shot, powering his finish into the top corner from a tight angle. This goal brought Iran back into the game, setting the stage for a tense encounter.

Key Moments and VAR Drama

The game was marked by several critical moments, including a missed penalty for Iran and a disallowed goal in stoppage time. Iran captain Mehdi Taremi won a penalty after a challenge from Mohamed Abdelmonem. However, Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made a save, denying Taremi from the spot.

Later in the match, Egypt faced a setback when Mohamed Salah limped off with an injury before the hour mark. Abdelmonem had also left the pitch earlier in the game. These injuries could impact Egypt‘s squad depth as they prepare for the knockout stages.

The most dramatic moment of the match occurred in stoppage time when Iran thought they had secured a late winner through Shoja Khalilzadeh. His strike prompted celebrations from the Iran squad, but the goal was subsequently ruled out for offside after a VAR review. The decision was made because Khalilzadeh was deemed to be in an offside position when the initial shot, which rebounded off the goalkeeper, was taken by his teammate Mohammad Ghorbani.

Despite the disallowed goal, Iran continued to press, with Saeid Ezatolahi hitting the crossbar. However, Egypt held on for the draw, securing their progression. The match was described as a physical and entertaining affair, with four bookings in the first half alone, indicating the intensity of the contest.

Iran’s Qualification Prospects and Team Performance

With three draws in their group matches, Iran finished third with a goal difference of zero. Their qualification for the Round of 32 now depends on the results of other group games. Iran needs specific outcomes in other matches to advance as one of the best eight third-placed teams.

For Iran to qualify, one of the following scenarios needs to occur: DR Congo fail to beat Uzbekistan, Ghana beat Croatia, or Algeria and Austria avoid a draw. According to one projection model, Iran has a strong chance of progressing, with a 92 per cent probability of reaching the Round of 32.

Throughout the match, Iran demonstrated a significant attacking threat, creating five big chances compared to Egypt‘s none, and generating more than double the expected goals (xG). Ramin Rezaeian, in particular, was noted for his impressive performance. Despite their attacking efforts, Iran‘s strategy in the second half, which involved sitting back with five defenders and four midfielders, suggested they were content with a draw, believing it would be sufficient for qualification.

Rampant Rezaeian Credit: fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Egypt, on the other hand, will need to address concerns about their strongest starting XI and the fitness of key players like Mohamed Salah. Injuries and changes in their defensive line have impacted their rhythm, with five big chances conceded in this match alone. Egypt will face Australia in the next round.

The outcome of Iran‘s qualification will be known by Saturday night, determining if they will extend their stay at their Mexican base in Tijuana.

Iran’s World Cup experience

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei has stated that his nation has faced “unfair” treatment from the United States during the World Cup, urging FIFA to intervene in future tournaments. The team’s participation in the competition has been set against the backdrop of ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran.

Before the tournament commenced, Iran‘s training base was relocated from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico. The team also encountered travel restrictions throughout the competition. For their initial two matches in Los Angeles, the Iran squad was only permitted to enter the United States the day before each match and was required to depart on the same day, adhering to their visa terms.

These travel restrictions were eased for their game in Seattle, allowing the team to arrive two days prior to the match. However, they were still mandated to return to Tijuana following the game. Ghalenoei expressed pride in his players, highlighting their performance despite the challenges. He commented that the host country’s treatment was “very unfairly” directed towards them.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had previously noted the organization’s efforts to ensure Iran‘s participation in the World Cup. Before the tournament, Infantino stated he had promised Iran they would compete, despite some believing it would be impossible. He also mentioned visiting the Iran dressing room after their opening draw with New Zealand.

Iran‘s final Group G match against Egypt resulted in a 1-1 draw, leaving their chances of advancing to the last 32 uncertain. A goal by Shoja Khalilzadeh in stoppage time, which initially appeared to secure a knockout stage spot, was disallowed for offside after a video assistant referee (VAR) review. Ghalenoei reflected on this, adding that beyond feeling like an oppressed team, they also experienced bad luck.

Ramin Rezaeian and Mehdi Taremi of Iran react after the 1-1 draw with Egypt in the World Cup Credit: nytimes.com

Captain’s criticism of logistics

Iran captain Mehdi Taremi described the tournament’s logistical arrangements as a “disaster.” He voiced strong criticism of FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, regarding the handling of his country’s World Cup campaign. Following their third group stage draw, which left Iran awaiting other results to determine their progression to the round of 32, Taremi reiterated his concerns.

Taremi and his teammates were scheduled to fly from Seattle back to Tijuana, Mexico, after their match. The team’s initial base camp was intended to be in Tucson, Arizona, but it was moved to Mexico at the end of May. This relocation occurred as military conflict between the United States and Iran persisted, following military strikes by the U.S. and Israel against Iran on February 28, which led to retaliatory strikes from Iran.

The Iran squad and staff encountered difficulties entering and exiting the U.S. for matches. Taremi indicated that Infantino had not fulfilled his promise to improve the situation. He recalled Infantino‘s visit to their changing room after the first game against New Zealand, where the FIFA president reportedly said, “It’s just the beginning…”

Taremi questioned the constant travel to Tijuana, despite his affection for the people of Mexico. He stated, “But as professional players, in a professional competition, it’s not right.” He further elaborated on the lack of logistical support, noting that their logistics personnel did not have visas. Taremi expressed the team’s feeling that the situation was unfair, asking, “Who wants to help us?”

In his opening World Cup speech in Mexico City, Infantino had previously mentioned he would have driven a bus from Tehran, Iran’s capital, to ensure the team reached the tournament. Taremi, who missed a penalty in the first half of the draw with Egypt, was asked if he felt Iran was wanted in the competition. He responded by saying, “We have to fight against everything here.”

Outlook for progression

The draw with Egypt meant Iran finished third in Group G. Their progression to the knockout stages now depends on results from other groups, as they aim to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. Iran is currently sixth in the standings of third-placed sides, with three groups yet to conclude and the top eight progressing.

For Iran to be eliminated, specific results would need to occur, such as Algeria and Austria drawing in Group J, DR Congo beating Uzbekistan, and Croatia securing at least a point against Ghana. Despite these dependencies, a live predictor tool indicated a 92 per cent chance of Iran reaching the round of 32.

Ghalenoei urged FIFA not to allow host countries to treat players and teams in such a manner in future World Cups. BBC Sport has contacted FIFA for comment on the matter.

Seattle is set to host a designated ‘Pride Match’ during the World Cup 2026, featuring Iran and Egypt. This initiative coincides with the city’s annual Pride Weekend, which celebrates diversity and the LGBTQ+ community. The decision to designate the match as a ‘Pride Match’ was made by local organisers well before the teams were drawn to play in Seattle. The match is scheduled for 26 June, kicking off at 04:00 BST on 27 June.

The city’s organising committee has planned various events, including drag performances and Pride watch parties, with rainbow flags expected to be displayed inside the stadium. These flags symbolise LGBTQ+ pride, diversity, and social inclusion. Hedda McLendon, from Seattle’s World Cup organising committee, stated that the timing was not intended to provoke, noting that the Pride Weekend was planned before the teams were announced. McLendon emphasised that the event is about Seattle’s identity and culture, regardless of the participating teams.

Jess Fishlock, a Wales football legend who plays for Seattle Reign FC and is part of the host committee, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of Pride to Seattle’s identity. She noted that the committee would maintain its stance regardless of which teams were playing. The local organising committee has affirmed its commitment to proceeding with the event, stating that football has a unique power to unite people and that they are honoured to celebrate Pride as part of the global football community.

Team reactions and FIFA’s stance

Both Iran and Egypt have expressed reservations about the ‘Pride Match’ designation. Iran’s head coach, Amir Ghalenoei, indicated that his team is focused solely on football, stating, “We are here to play football, not for other things.” He added that they would not address matters considered forbidden in their religion. The Egyptian Football Association sent a letter to FIFA, rejecting any activities promoting LGBTQ+ during the match, citing potential conflicts with cultural and religious sensitivities.

Despite these objections, FIFA has stated that it has no official involvement in the ‘Pride Match’ plans. The governing body clarified that the event is a World Cup game taking place in a city marking Pride Weekend, not a ‘FIFA Pride Match‘. FIFA President Gianni Infantino further clarified that while events organised by external organisations would take place in Seattle, they had “nothing to do with the match itself.” However, FIFA confirmed that general statements of human rights, including rainbow flags, are permitted inside stadiums under the World Cup 2026 stadium code of conduct, provided they are used consistently with the code.

FIFA maintains that the World Cup 2026 is an inclusive event welcoming people from all backgrounds, including fans of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The organisation’s branding will be limited to its regular ‘No Discrimination’ campaign material. Any discrimination within the stadium would be addressed using FIFA’s three-step procedure, which includes stopping the match and making announcements.

Community perspectives and broader implications

The initiative has been largely welcomed by the local community in Seattle. Eric Wahl, a member of the Seattle Pride Match Advisory Committee, emphasised the goal of highlighting LGBTQ+ organisations and businesses in Seattle and connecting them with the shared love of football. He expressed hope that fans from Egypt and Iran would feel welcome in Seattle, regardless of their personal identities. Wahl also noted the importance of Pride Month for queer individuals, particularly those from areas where acceptance is less evident.

At a fan zone, Egyptian fans indicated that gay pride was not their primary concern, with one fan, Makarius Demian, stating, “Right now it’s about two teams trying to get to the next round.” However, local business owners Ayman Almasri and Amani Abouammo, who run an Egyptian restaurant pop-up, acknowledged the cultural misunderstanding surrounding the event. They observed that while such celebrations are part of the culture in Seattle, they are not customary in their home country.

The match itself holds significant stakes for both teams, with Egypt entering with momentum after a victory against New Zealand and a chance to win Group G. Iran, on the other hand, faces challenges related to politics, travel restrictions, and preparation time. The game is seen as a reflection of what happens when a World Cup lands in a city with one set of values, while participating teams arrive with different ones. Eric Wahl plans to wear a version of the rainbow soccer ball shirt that his late brother, journalist Grant Wahl, was detained for wearing in Qatar, seeing the event as an opportunity to honour his memory.
