By Lucy Ashby — 2 July 2026 — 4 min read

Controversial Red Card Incident

Folarin Balogun, the USA striker, received a controversial red card following a VAR review during his side’s World Cup victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred midway through the second half, leaving Balogun visibly shocked.

The play involved Balogun and Tarik Muharemovic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, where their legs tangled while contesting the ball. Replays, shown in super-slow motion, depicted Balogun’s leg scraping down the calf of the Bosnian defender. Initially, Brazilian referee Raphael Claus did not award a free-kick, but after both players were injured and play halted, VAR officials directed Claus to the pitchside monitor. Upon reviewing the incident, the red card was promptly issued.

The decision quickly drew comparisons from fans and pundits to an unpunished challenge by Lionel Messi in Argentina’s opening match against Algeria, where the Argentine captain did not receive a card. Former England women’s striker Sue Smith commented on Balogun’s incident, stating that while the replay in slow motion might suggest a red card, watching it in real-time makes the decision seem harsh. Smith suggested Balogun was attempting to protect the ball and plant his foot, and the unfortunate placement led to the contact.

The sending off meant the US team had to play the remaining 25 minutes with ten men. Despite this numerical disadvantage, Malik Tillman’s free-kick secured the victory with eight minutes left in the match.

USA Secures Last 16 Spot

The US team overcame the controversial red card and a gritty performance from Bosnia and Herzegovina to secure a 2-0 win, propelling them into the World Cup last 16. The victory was sealed by Tillman’s magnificently placed free-kick from the edge of the box.

The match saw moments of disbelief from the US camp, including Weston McKennie’s reaction and coach Mauricio Pochettino’s incredulous gestures. Pochettino expressed pride in his players after the game, highlighting the team’s resilience.

The win marks a significant achievement for the US men’s national team, placing them in a conversation not seen since 2002, when Bruce Arena’s squad reached the quarter-finals. This hard-earned victory and the team’s steely demeanor have made them a national topic of discussion in the US.

The match was played in front of a sold-out, pro-US crowd at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. The fans were treated to bright moments early in the game, though an early goal, which had been a feature of previous US matches in the tournament, did not materialise immediately.

In the fourth minute, Christian Pulisic created an early danger, cutting in from the left and firing a shot that was blocked by Stjepan Radeljić. Pulisic later commented on the team’s performance, stating that they had to “dig deep” and that the red card incident demonstrated the team’s strength.

Bosnia and Herzegovina also had their chances, forcing an awkward save from Matt Freese early on and an audacious attempt at an Olimpico by Kerim Alajbegović, which Freese managed to keep out.

Match Progression and Key Moments

During the first-half hydration break, the atmosphere in the stadium was enhanced by the psychedelic rock band Rising Rhythm, playing a repeated riff. The US team matched this commitment with a physical first half. Sergiño Dest made runs behind the Bosnia and Herzegovina defence, and McKennie continued to find space, while Balogun remained a threat.

Balogun initially thought he had scored after 32 minutes when Dest’s pressure led to McKennie finding Balogun, who applied an expert finish. However, the goal was disallowed due to Balogun being marginally offside, serving as a warning shot to the opposition.

The breakthrough for the US finally came just before half-time. Tim Ream initiated the play by getting to an underhit clearance. Ream opted for a first-time knock to McKennie, who then executed a dummy for Tillman. The ball was deflected and caught under Muharemovic’s foot, but Balogun was alert and finished, with the goal counting this time.

Balogun had another opportunity for a second goal shortly after, following a combination play where McKennie found Dest with a lofted pass over the defence. Dest’s header across goal was met by Balogun, but the ball hit the top of the crossbar and went out of play.

The US defence might have felt a reprieve when Edin Džeko was forced off with an injury after 50 minutes. However, their challenges soon escalated with Balogun’s red card incident in the 64th minute.

Following the red card, the US defence had to be fully committed as Bosnia and Herzegovina showed increased intensity with their numerical advantage. Despite this, the US maintained pressure, leading to Dest earning a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area. Tillman then stepped up and delivered a dipping effort that went over the wall and under the crossbar, bringing palpable relief to his team.

Balogun will face a minimum one-match suspension for serious foul play. There is also the possibility of an extended ban if the FIFA disciplinary committee deems it necessary, as per FIFA’s disciplinary code, which offers no grounds for appeal in such cases.

The US team is now set to face Belgium in the last 16 on Monday in Seattle, Washington.

By Dominic Hayes — 27 June 2026 — 4 min read

Iran’s World Cup experience

Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei has stated that his nation has faced “unfair” treatment from the United States during the World Cup, urging FIFA to intervene in future tournaments. The team’s participation in the competition has been set against the backdrop of ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran.

Before the tournament commenced, Iran‘s training base was relocated from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico. The team also encountered travel restrictions throughout the competition. For their initial two matches in Los Angeles, the Iran squad was only permitted to enter the United States the day before each match and was required to depart on the same day, adhering to their visa terms.

These travel restrictions were eased for their game in Seattle, allowing the team to arrive two days prior to the match. However, they were still mandated to return to Tijuana following the game. Ghalenoei expressed pride in his players, highlighting their performance despite the challenges. He commented that the host country’s treatment was “very unfairly” directed towards them.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had previously noted the organization’s efforts to ensure Iran‘s participation in the World Cup. Before the tournament, Infantino stated he had promised Iran they would compete, despite some believing it would be impossible. He also mentioned visiting the Iran dressing room after their opening draw with New Zealand.

Iran‘s final Group G match against Egypt resulted in a 1-1 draw, leaving their chances of advancing to the last 32 uncertain. A goal by Shoja Khalilzadeh in stoppage time, which initially appeared to secure a knockout stage spot, was disallowed for offside after a video assistant referee (VAR) review. Ghalenoei reflected on this, adding that beyond feeling like an oppressed team, they also experienced bad luck.

Ramin Rezaeian and Mehdi Taremi of Iran react after the 1-1 draw with Egypt in the World Cup Credit: nytimes.com

Captain’s criticism of logistics

Iran captain Mehdi Taremi described the tournament’s logistical arrangements as a “disaster.” He voiced strong criticism of FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, regarding the handling of his country’s World Cup campaign. Following their third group stage draw, which left Iran awaiting other results to determine their progression to the round of 32, Taremi reiterated his concerns.

Taremi and his teammates were scheduled to fly from Seattle back to Tijuana, Mexico, after their match. The team’s initial base camp was intended to be in Tucson, Arizona, but it was moved to Mexico at the end of May. This relocation occurred as military conflict between the United States and Iran persisted, following military strikes by the U.S. and Israel against Iran on February 28, which led to retaliatory strikes from Iran.

The Iran squad and staff encountered difficulties entering and exiting the U.S. for matches. Taremi indicated that Infantino had not fulfilled his promise to improve the situation. He recalled Infantino‘s visit to their changing room after the first game against New Zealand, where the FIFA president reportedly said, “It’s just the beginning…”

Taremi questioned the constant travel to Tijuana, despite his affection for the people of Mexico. He stated, “But as professional players, in a professional competition, it’s not right.” He further elaborated on the lack of logistical support, noting that their logistics personnel did not have visas. Taremi expressed the team’s feeling that the situation was unfair, asking, “Who wants to help us?”

In his opening World Cup speech in Mexico City, Infantino had previously mentioned he would have driven a bus from Tehran, Iran’s capital, to ensure the team reached the tournament. Taremi, who missed a penalty in the first half of the draw with Egypt, was asked if he felt Iran was wanted in the competition. He responded by saying, “We have to fight against everything here.”

Outlook for progression

The draw with Egypt meant Iran finished third in Group G. Their progression to the knockout stages now depends on results from other groups, as they aim to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. Iran is currently sixth in the standings of third-placed sides, with three groups yet to conclude and the top eight progressing.

For Iran to be eliminated, specific results would need to occur, such as Algeria and Austria drawing in Group J, DR Congo beating Uzbekistan, and Croatia securing at least a point against Ghana. Despite these dependencies, a live predictor tool indicated a 92 per cent chance of Iran reaching the round of 32.

Ghalenoei urged FIFA not to allow host countries to treat players and teams in such a manner in future World Cups. BBC Sport has contacted FIFA for comment on the matter.

Turkey secured their first World Cup victory since 2002, ending the United States‘ unbeaten run with a stoppage-time winner in Los Angeles. The match saw Turkey come from behind to claim the win, despite the United States having already secured their progression to the last 32 of the competition.

The co-hosts, United States, started strongly, with Auston Trusty scoring early in the match, just over two minutes into play. This goal marked the second quickest ever scored by the US in a World Cup. However, Turkey, who had lost their two previous opening games, soon found their rhythm.

Vincenzo Montella‘s side equalised through Arda Guler, who scored Turkey‘s first goal of the finals with a close-range finish. Orkun Kokcu then put Turkey ahead, with his shot appearing to deflect off Baris Alper Yilmaz, completing a turnaround in the match. Real Madrid midfielder Guler was noted for his impressive involvement in the build-up.

The United States, managed by Mauricio Pochettino, increased their intensity after half-time. Sebastian Berhalter brought the US level with an effort from distance. Substitute Christian Pulisic had multiple opportunities to score, with Turkey goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir making crucial saves, including tipping one shot against the post.

In the final moments of the game, Kaan Ayhan secured the victory for Turkey with a prodded finish from Can Uzun‘s touch towards goal. This late goal marked Turkey‘s first World Cup win in over two decades.

Group D developments

Despite the loss, the United States had already secured top spot in their group following a previous win against Australia. They are scheduled to play Bosnia-Herzegovina in the last 32 of the competition on 2 July at 01:00 BST in Santa Clara. Turkey, however, will be eliminated from the competition after finishing at the bottom of their group.

Meanwhile, in another Group D match, the Socceroos of Australia secured their progression to the knockout round of 32 with a draw against Paraguay in Santa Clara. Australia only needed a draw to secure second place in the group. Tony Popovic made six changes to the starting line-up for the match, including giving starts to Nestory Irankunda, Cristian Volpato, Connor Metcalfe, Aziz Behich, Lucas Herrington, and Jackson Irvine.

Irvine was highlighted for his performance in midfield, and Cristian Volpato formed a strong connection with Jordan Bos on the right side of midfield. Bos had Australia‘s best chance of the game late on, with a shot that went just wide. Paraguay‘s only significant challenge came late in the game when Maurício‘s shot was saved by Pat Beach.

Australia will now await the outcome of Group G to determine their next opponent, with Iran currently in second place, but Belgium, Egypt, or New Zealand still having a chance to be their opponents in Dallas.

The Socceroos‘ coach, Ange Postecoglou, expressed pride in the team’s achievement, noting that it was a significant accomplishment for Australia to advance from the group stage of another World Cup. He emphasised the importance of consistently reaching the knockout stages and winning knockout games for countries like Australia to progress to the next level in international football.

Jordan Bos also shared his thoughts after the match, stating that it was a good performance from the team despite the tough game. He acknowledged that while they wanted to win, securing the draw and advancing to the next round was the primary objective. The United States will face Bosnia-Herzegovina on 2 July.

First Half Action Sees Goals for Both Sides

The match between Turkiye and the USA featured an active first half, with both teams finding the back of the net. Turkiye initially took a 2-1 lead with a goal from O. Kökçü. This goal came after Guler played in Elmali, who then provided a low cross for Kökçü to convert.

Before Kökçü‘s goal, the USA had an effort disallowed. A corner kick led to an initial header being blocked, followed by a save on Pepi‘s shot. McKenzie put in the rebound, but both players were deemed offside, leading to the goal being ruled out.

The USA had several other opportunities in the first half. McKennie attempted a long-range shot from about 25 yards out, which was deflected by a defender and comfortably pushed away by Cakir. Pepi also played in Scally on the right flank, but Turkiye cleared the resulting cross.

Weah managed to get behind the Turkiye defence but could not centre the ball for Aaronson, with his cross going into the arms of Cakir. McKennie also put a deep cross into the box, but it went over the heads of his teammates.

Second Half Begins with Equaliser

The second half began with Turkiye getting the play underway. Soon after, the USA found an equaliser, making the score 2-2. S. Berhalter scored with a powerful drive from the edge of the box, which went through a cluster of bodies and past Cakir‘s near post after a long throw.

Following the equaliser, Cakir was active, punching a deflected effort from Reyna rather than catching it. Pepi threatened to break through on goal, but Kabak stayed tight and shepherded the ball to the goalkeeper.

The USA made a significant substitution, with Pulisic entering the field for Weah, receiving a standing ovation. Shortly after coming on, Pulisic was involved in the play, bringing down a ball in the left side of the box, but Celik put it out for a goal kick.

Pulisic later had an attempt blocked by Cakir from a narrow angle, with Aaronson‘s follow-up going wide. Cakir was also forced to tip an effort onto the post after a deflected cross hit Pulisic, requiring treatment after colliding with the post.

Match Officials and Venue Details

The match is taking place at SoFi Stadium in the Los Angeles area. The referee for the game is Mustapha Ghorbal from Algeria, who is officiating at his second World Cup, having also been involved in 2022. He was previously in charge of Scotland‘s 1-0 victory over Haiti in the group stages of that tournament.

Ghorbal‘s officiating team includes compatriots Mokrane Gourari and Abbes Akram Zehrouni as linesmen. Omar Al Ali is serving as the fourth official, with Mohamed Al-Hammadi as the reserve official. The VAR officials for this fixture are yet to be confirmed.

The USA entered this match guaranteed to top their group, while Turkiye had no chance of moving from the bottom of the table, even with a victory.

The third quarter of the match concluded with Elmali reaching the by-line and pulling the ball back into a dangerous area, though no teammate was there to convert.
