Aston Villa have announced the loan signing of Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho, with the deal set to run until the end of the 2026-27 season. The transfer includes a conditional obligation for Villa to buy the player, with Garnacho already agreeing to a four-year contract at Villa Park.
The terms of the obligation to buy clause have not been publicly disclosed by either club. However, it is anticipated that the clause will be activated if specific conditions are met, such as a certain number of appearances by Garnacho during the upcoming season. Chelsea reportedly believes these terms are easily achievable, which would allow them to secure their original £43m valuation for the player.
Garnacho’s move from Stamford Bridge follows Chelsea’s recent acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Villa for a record £117m fee. Villa’s head coach, Unai Emery, expressed his satisfaction with Garnacho’s arrival, stating his delight with the player’s talent, youth, and eagerness to contribute to the club’s project.
Squad changes at Villa Park
Garnacho marks Villa’s fourth signing of the summer, joining Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Modou Keba Cisse. This summer has seen significant player movement at Villa Park, with total player sales approaching £200m. Departures include Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Enzo Barrenechea, and Lewis Dobbin.
Chelsea, on the other hand, has been looking to offload Garnacho despite signing him just last September in a £40m deal from Manchester United. Manchester United is reportedly due 10% of any eventual transfer fee for Garnacho. His impact at Stamford Bridge was limited, with only one Premier League goal to his name. The arrivals of Rogers and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda have further increased the need for Chelsea to reduce their squad size.
Garnacho’s departure was also influenced by information that he was not guaranteed regular playing time under Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso. He did not report for pre-season duty as his departure was being finalised. Despite being named in Argentina’s initial 55-man selection, he did not participate in this summer’s World Cup.
Garnacho’s performance and future
Unai Emery has shown confidence in the eight-cap Argentina international as he works to rebuild his squad. Villa has been active in the transfer market, a strategy deemed important given their financial situation and the general nature of the transfer window. Garnacho, who also attracted interest from Roma, was seen as a good opportunity, particularly with the option of an initial loan that includes an obligation to buy if certain clauses are met. This structure provides Villa with financial control, which is crucial given the Premier League’s and Uefa’s financial fair play rules.
If the move becomes permanent, Garnacho will have achieved something that other loanees at Villa have not. Previous temporary moves for players like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Harvey Elliott had varying degrees of success. Rashford’s 17-game spell at Villa Park in 2024-25 led to an England return, while Sancho’s performance was less impactful, and Emery’s decision not to play Elliott more avoided triggering an obligation for a permanent transfer.
Garnacho’s statistics from last season show one goal and four assists in 24 Premier League games for Chelsea, or eight goals in 43 appearances across all competitions. His previous record at Manchester United included eight assists and 16 goals in 93 games. These figures suggest that Garnacho will need to elevate his performance to meet the standards set by Emery.
The transfer between Chelsea and Aston Villa is part of a series of recent deals between the two clubs. This includes the £117m deal for Morgan Rogers, as well as the sales of Carney Chukwuemeka in 2022 and Omari Kellyman in 2024 to Chelsea. Additionally, Ian Maatsen moved to Villa in 2024, and Axel Disasi had a brief loan spell at Villa in 2025.
Earlier this summer, Villa received a partially suspended £19.4m fine from Uefa for a significant breach of squad-cost rules for 2025. A portion of this fine, £12.9m, is suspended, contingent on the club significantly decreasing its squad-cost ratio in 2026. This also restricts the club’s ability to register new players on their squad list for the upcoming Champions League season.
