Calls for Argentina’s World Cup Expulsion
Following their defeat in the 2026 World Cup final, a petition advocating for Argentina‘s lifetime expulsion from the tournament garnered significant attention. The “Leave, Argentina” petition accumulated over 23 million signatures, far surpassing its initial goal of 5 million. According to Euro News, the petition reached 23,316,108 signatures. It accused FIFA and its referees of bias towards Argentina and captain Lionel Messi, questioning the fairness of competition when the winner was perceived as predetermined. The petition’s official website concluded with the statement: “FIFA ignored us, but Spain kept its promises, thank you Spain.”
This petition came close to breaking the record for the largest signed petition in history, a mark held by “Jubilee 2000” which gathered over 24 million signatures in 1997. Despite the large number of signatures, there was no official response regarding Argentina‘s exclusion from the tournament.
Controversy Surrounding the Final Match
The 2026 World Cup final saw Spain claim their second world title, defeating Argentina with a single goal from Ferran Torres in the 106th minute. The match, held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, was officiated by Slovenia‘s Slavko Vincic and was marked by controversy. Incidents included Argentina‘s Mac Allister and Nicolas Tagliafico avoiding cards for fouls that many believed warranted them, and Spain having two goals disallowed.
Lionel Messi missed out on a final title before his announced retirement from international football, as well as the Golden Boot and the tournament’s all-time top scorer award, both of which went to Kylian Mbappe with 22 goals. England secured third place, their best World Cup performance since 1966, after a 6-4 victory over France in the third-place play-off.
The final was not the only instance of controversy. Throughout the tournament, a series of refereeing decisions sparked debate, particularly concerning Argentina. These included instances of pushing, shirt-pulling, and reckless tackles. An early flashpoint occurred during the Argentina-Algeria match, where Lionel Messi‘s tackle on Aissa Mandi was considered by some refereeing experts to be worthy of a red card. Further controversy arose in the round-of-16 match against Egypt, which Argentina won 3-2. Egypt‘s manager, Hossam Hassan, suggested that factors beyond the pitch, possibly marketing reasons, influenced the outcome to keep Messi in the tournament.
Petitions for a Replay and Disqualification
In the wake of the final, an Argentinian fan, Gisela Sanchez, initiated a petition on Change.org calling for a replay of the match. This petition, which questioned the performance of referee Slavko Vincic and alleged officiating “irregularities,” has since gathered over 80,000 signatures. The petition’s description accused Mr. Vincic of being “bribed to influence the match’s outcome.” It argued that the final’s integrity was compromised and called on FIFA to review the incidents with seriousness and transparency.
Despite these claims, FIFA regulations do not permit replays based on fan dissatisfaction, and the governing body has not indicated it will review the request. The petition for a replay follows a similar effort by France fans after their semi-final defeat to Spain, which also gained over 80,000 signatures.
Separately, a poll conducted by the Daily Express asked its readers about disqualifying Argentina from the World Cup. An overwhelming 98 per cent of over 30,000 respondents indicated they wanted Argentina retrospectively removed from the final World Cup standings, which would promote England to second place. However, it is considered highly unlikely that FIFA would take such an unprecedented step.
