Rory McIlroy is among five players sharing the lead after the opening round of the Genesis Scottish Open. The tournament, co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour, is being held at The Renaissance Club in East Lothian, Scotland. Scottie Scheffler, the betting favourite, is also in contention following a solid start to the event.
McIlroy, making his first appearance since the US Open, posted a five-under 65. He shares the top spot with Patrick Cantlay, Rasmus Hojgaard, Tom Kim, and Bernd Wiesberger. This performance marks a strong return for McIlroy, who previously won this event three years ago.
During his opening round, McIlroy recorded an eagle, five birdies, and two bogeys. He began his round on the back nine, bogeying his first hole before recovering with a two-putt birdie at the par-five 12th. He continued to gain shots at the 14th and 16th holes. Although he failed to save par at the 18th, he then rolled in an 18-foot eagle at the par-five first hole. McIlroy noted that his driving was particularly effective, a continuation of his form from the US Open, allowing him to attack the course and create scoring opportunities.
The Renaissance Club, which has hosted the event for seven consecutive years, was designed by Tom Doak and constructed in 2008. The course is intended to be a tribute to Scottish golf, featuring a links challenge and rugged terrain. The difficulty of play often depends on the weather conditions, particularly coastal winds, which have led to winning scores ranging from seven-under to 18-under in previous years.
Contenders on a Crowded Leaderboard
The leaderboard is currently congested, with 71 players separated by just five strokes after the first round. Among those a single shot off the pace is Brooks Koepka, part of a seven-strong group. Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are two shots behind the leaders, in a group that includes local favourite Bob MacIntyre and US Open champion Wyndham Clark.
Scheffler, who is set to defend his title at The Open next week, finished his round three shots back. He carded a two-under 68, which included four birdies and two bogeys. Scheffler expressed that he wished he could have gained a few more shots and noted that the two bogeys were a setback, suggesting he could have played the par-fives more effectively.
Cantlay’s round featured five birdies and no bogeys. Wiesberger briefly held the solo lead before a bogey on his penultimate hole. Hojgaard also reached six-under before a double-bogey at the par-four 16th impacted his progress. Despite this, Hojgaard was the best performer in the afternoon wave, birdieing the par-three 17th but unable to secure another birdie on the final hole to reclaim the top spot. Kim completed the leading quintet with his five-under 65 earlier in the day.
Wyndham Clark, despite a double-bogey and a bogey within his first four holes, remains within two shots of the lead. Clark has shown strong form recently, gaining over two strokes per round since April 1 and securing four top-10 finishes in nine starts, including two wins. His performance at The Renaissance Club has been consistently good, with no finish worse than T25 in his four previous appearances.
Looking Ahead in the Tournament
Other notable players include Aaron Rai, who posted a one-over 71, and Jon Rahm, who needed two late birdies to salvage a three-over 73. The tournament is an important event for many players, serving as the last opportunity for some to qualify for The Open Championship next week.
McIlroy has a strong history at The Renaissance Club, with a win, a T2, and a T4 in his last three appearances at the Genesis Scottish Open, gaining over three strokes per round during this period. His driver play has been particularly effective, gaining multiple strokes off the tee in eight consecutive events, contributing to a runner-up finish at The Genesis Invitational, a win at the Masters, and a T7 at the PGA Championship this year.
