Mbappe’s Injury and France’s Victory
Kylian Mbappe, the France forward, described an injury sustained during his nation’s World Cup quarter-final match against Morocco on Thursday as a “minor ankle injury,” stating he was “completely fine.” The match, held in Boston, saw France secure a 2-0 victory, advancing them to the semi-finals.
Mbappe opened the scoring for France with a curled finish, bringing his goal tally level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race, both having eight goals. He later assisted Ousmane Dembele for France’s second goal. Despite winning a penalty earlier in the match, Mbappe’s spot-kick was saved by Yassine Bounou.
The incident occurred when Mbappe was brought down by Morocco’s Noussair Mazraoui, who conceded the penalty. Later in the game, Mbappe was involved in another challenge with Issa Diop, which resulted in a yellow card for the Morocco defender. Mbappe left the pitch in the 76th minute, with Jean-Philippe Mateta coming on as a substitute.
Following his departure from the field, Mbappe was observed with an ice pack on his foot or ankle. However, he was later seen celebrating the victory with his teammates, jumping up and down. After the match, Mbappe addressed concerns about his condition, explaining that Mateta was in a better position to play the remaining minutes due to being fitter at that moment.

Didier Deschamps, the France coach, also provided an update, noting that Mbappe had a “slight pain in his ankle, but nothing serious.” This suggests that the substitution was a precautionary measure, especially with France holding a comfortable lead.
France’s Dominance and Defensive Strength
France showcased their dominance throughout the match against Morocco. They outshot their opponents 21 to five and created five big chances compared to Morocco’s zero. The expected goals (xG) tally further highlighted their superiority, finishing at 3.04 to 0.14.
The team’s strong performance extended to their defence, which has been a notable feature of their World Cup campaign. France has conceded only two goals in the tournament so far, against Norway and Senegal. Since the start of the knockout phase, they have allowed just 0.97 xG across three matches, demonstrating their defensive solidity.
In the match against Morocco, Didier Deschamps made only one change from the team that played Paraguay in the Round of 16, bringing in Desire Doue for Bradley Barcola on the left wing. Manu Kone, who has been instrumental in France’s defensive displays, was substituted shortly after France went 2-0 up, as he was one booking away from a suspension.
Morocco struggled to create significant opportunities, recording their first shot on target in the 84th minute. Yassine Bounou was a standout performer for Morocco, saving a penalty and making six saves during the game.
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals
With their victory over Morocco, France has secured their place in the World Cup semi-finals. They are scheduled to face either Spain or Belgium in Dallas on Tuesday, July 14.

France, considered tournament favourites, will be hoping that Mbappe’s ankle issue does not impact his availability for the upcoming crucial match. Mbappe has completed 90 minutes in previous matches against Senegal and Paraguay, with coach Deschamps having given him precautionary rests in other games.
Mbappe’s performance against Morocco, which included a goal, an assist, and a penalty won, earned him 13 points, making him a top scorer in fantasy football. His ability to consistently get shots on target has also contributed to his strong form in every round of the tournament.
