Argentina secures Group J win

Argentina concluded its World Cup 2026 Group J fixtures by facing Jordan. The match saw Argentina take an early lead with goals from Giovani Lo Celso and Lautaro Martinez. However, Mousa Al-Tamari of Jordan managed to halve the deficit in the second half.

Lionel Messi, who started on the bench for Argentina, was introduced into the game in the 60th minute. His entry followed a period where Jordan had shown increased pressure, particularly in the second half.

Key player performances and substitutions

Giovani Lo Celso, a midfielder for Real Betis, made a notable impact in his first World Cup appearance. He was central to Argentina‘s play, dictating the tempo from midfield and scoring a goal from a free kick he had earned. His performance was highlighted as a strong case for inclusion by manager Lionel Scaloni, who made several changes to the squad for this match.

Another player who stood out was Giuliano Simeone, son of Diego Simeone, the coach of Atletico Madrid. Giuliano Simeone, currently playing for Atletico Madrid, was noted for his dynamic runs during the game. He was later substituted in the 71st minute for Valentin Barco, marking Scaloni‘s fourth change of the match.

Lionel Messi came on as a sub in the second half.Getty Images Credit: nytimes.com

Jordan also made changes at halftime, bringing on Mousa Al-Tamari and Mahmoud Al-Mardi. Al-Tamari, sometimes referred to as the “Jordanian Messi,” was instrumental in Jordan‘s goal, sliding the ball home after a low cross from Ihsan Haddad. This goal marked Jordan‘s first conceded goal in this World Cup, and they have now scored in all three of their group games.

The match also saw a moment of concern for Lo Celso, who appeared to suffer an ankle injury. Despite this, he returned to his feet and continued playing, though he later made way for another player. This incident brought back memories of his absence from the 2022 World Cup squad due to injury.

Group J implications and other match details

With Argentina already confirmed as group winners, the match against Jordan had no bearing on their progression to the round of 32, where they are set to play Cape Verde. Jordan, making their World Cup debut, had already been eliminated before this fixture.

In the other Group J match, Algeria and Austria were level at 2-2. Austria, with a superior goal difference, needed only a draw to secure second place in the group. A draw would also be sufficient for Algeria to advance to the round of 32, while a defeat would result in their elimination.

Both Group J matches kicked off simultaneously at 03:00 BST. Argentina‘s starting lineup featured several changes, with only Emi Martinez and Lautaro Martinez retaining their places from the previous round. Lionel Messi was among nine changes made by Argentina‘s manager.

Jordan‘s lineup also saw two changes, with Mousa Al-Tamari initially benched. Riyad Mahrez started for Algeria, while Rayan Ait-Nouri was among the substitutes. Former Stoke City and West Ham United player Marko Arnautovic started for Austria.

The match saw Argentina maintain significant possession, holding 74 per cent in the second half, despite not registering a shot on target after halftime until later in the game. Jordan‘s Al-Arab received a booking in the 65th minute for a late challenge on Alexis Mac Allister.

Jordan‘s goal against Argentina marked a significant moment in their World Cup campaign.

By Lucy Ashby — 27 June 2026 — 3 min read

Cape Verde has made history by advancing to the knockout stages of the World Cup, securing a match against Argentina. The team, coached by Bubista, drew 0-0 with Saudi Arabia in Houston, a result that saw them finish second in Group H. This achievement marks them as the smallest country by population to reach this stage of the tournament and the first debutants since 2010 to do so.

The progression came after Uruguay’s 1-0 defeat against Spain was confirmed, leading to joyous celebrations among the Cape Verde players. The team secured their spot with three draws in a group that also included past World Cup winners Spain and Uruguay, surprising many who considered them outsiders.

Bubista expressed profound pride in his team’s accomplishment, stating that they have shown “nothing is impossible.” He highlighted that their success serves as an example for smaller nations, demonstrating that significant objectives can be achieved through focus, determination, and organised effort. He believes the team represents not only their country but also Africa and small countries globally.

The coach had previously stated his belief that Cape Verde would eventually reach such a prominent stage. He noted that the team overcame several challenges, proving that difficulties should not be feared. Bubista described reaching the knockout stage as an amazing feat for their people, supporters, and especially the players, who displayed personality and discipline.

Facing the Champions

The upcoming match against reigning champions Argentina will take place in Miami on Friday. Bubista conveyed his team’s pride in playing against Argentina, a country with which they share long-standing ties. He emphasised that Cape Verde will approach the game with their distinct identity, regardless of the opponent.

Bubista acknowledged that Argentina features some of the world’s top players, including Messi, whom some consider the greatest of all time. Despite the challenge, he promised that his team would play with attitude and responsibility. He views the opportunity to showcase their country to the world as a source of joy and an excellent outcome for Cape Verde.

Cape Verde’s players and staff celebrate on the pitch in Houston.Photograph: Soccrates Images/Getty Images Credit: theguardian.com

Midfielder Deroy Duarte described the experience as surreal, feeling like he was in a dream. He mentioned that playing in a World Cup had been a childhood aspiration and that being named man of the match while making history was beyond his imagination. Duarte encouraged celebration but also stressed the importance of focusing on the next match against Argentina, maintaining that “anything is possible.”

Saudi Arabia’s Campaign Concludes

In contrast, Georgios Donis, the coach of Saudi Arabia, expressed disappointment with his team’s performance. Saudi Arabia concluded their campaign with a single point, having struggled to create scoring opportunities or control the game. Donis remarked that his side rarely looked capable of securing the win they needed to advance.

He criticised his team’s lack of creativity and control, stating that a game cannot be won under such circumstances. The Saudi Arabian team departs the tournament after failing to secure a victory in their group stage matches.

Cape Verde celebrate Credit: bbc.com

Cape Verde, ranked 67th by Fifa, has garnered many new fans during their journey, reminding observers of the joy that football can bring. They are the first African debutants to progress from the World Cup group stage since Ghana in 2006.

The team’s historic progression sets the stage for a challenging encounter against Argentina, with their players ready to face the task with the same appetite shown throughout the tournament.

The celebrations among the Cape Verde players began as news of Uruguay’s match result against Spain filtered through.
