England secure top spot in Group L with win over Panama

England player ratings: How players rated in Panama World Cup game

England’s Performance Against Panama

England secured the top position in Group L after a victory against Panama, with goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane in the second half. The match, played in New York, saw England needing to restore momentum following a previous draw against Ghana.

Manager Thomas Tuchel aimed for urgency and tempo with his selection, fielding Bellingham in a deeper role and Morgan Rogers as the number 10. Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford were deployed on the wings, while Jarell Quansah started at right-back due to Reece James’ injury. Declan Rice was rested.

The first half saw England struggle to break down Panama’s defence, which maintained a compact 5-4-1 formation. Rashford forced a save from Orlando Mosquera early on, and Saka had an attempt blocked. Panama also created a chance when José Luis Rodríguez tested Jordan Pickford with a low shot.

Despite the initial difficulties, England improved after the interval. The breakthrough came from a Saka corner, which Bellingham expertly steered home. Bellingham later provided an assist for Kane, who scored England’s second goal, marking his eleventh World Cup goal, surpassing Gary Lineker’s record for the nation.

Player Ratings and Substitutions

Several players received ratings for their performances. Jordan Pickford made a good save but had some loose clearances. Jarell Quansah, making his first World Cup start at right-back, was solid defensively before being substituted in the second half due to an ankle injury. Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi were involved in recovery runs as Panama exploited spaces.

Nico O’Reilly’s ability to move into midfield from left-back was noted, as was his threat in the air. Elliot Anderson, playing as the main defensive midfielder, covered a lot of ground and injected pace into attacks. Jude Bellingham, playing a deeper role, was instrumental with a goal and an assist, showcasing his importance to the team.

Bukayo Saka was a constant threat on the ball, with his quality deliveries from corners proving to be a key weapon. Morgan Rogers, making his first start, was tidy in tight spaces. Marcus Rashford showed pace and forced a save, creating chances even if they didn’t always materialize into goals. Harry Kane became more involved as the game progressed, securing the win with his goal.

Substitutions included Djed Spence replacing the injured Quansah, and Noni Madueke coming on for Saka, maintaining pressure on Panama’s defence. Eberechi Eze and Ollie Watkins were introduced later in the game, with Jordan Henderson also coming on to help see out the match.

Manager’s Outlook and Panama’s Campaign

Despite the win, Thomas Tuchel appeared to have concerns about the overall display, particularly regarding how England might perform against top-tier teams in the knockout rounds. Panama, despite exiting the tournament with zero points, showed pride in their performance. This Panama side, managed by Thomas Christiansen, had previously reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa América and the final of the 2025 Concacaf Nations League.

The match was played in rainy conditions with a temperature of 23C. England had previously beaten Panama 6-1 in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, leading to expectations of a similar outcome. However, this encounter proved to be a more challenging affair for England.

England were considered too open at the back at times, relying on one-on-one situations, which allowed Panama to find spaces. The team laboured to find a way through in the first half, with Panama effectively shuffling across to defend against Saka and Rashford. Jude Bellingham was instrumental in helping England secure the win.

The team will now focus on the knockout rounds, with Tuchel having issues throughout the team to consider. Panama‘s substitute José Fajardo had a goal disallowed for offside towards the end of the match.
