By Dominic Hayes — 29 June 2026 — 5 min read

The recent elimination of South Korea from the 2026 World Cup has led to significant turmoil within the nation’s football community, culminating in the resignation of head coach Hong Myung-bo. This departure occurred just hours after the team’s exit was confirmed, prompting widespread criticism and calls for reform within the sport’s administration.

Hong, who also led the team during their group-stage exit at the 2014 World Cup, expressed regret, stating he was “genuinely very sorry.” His resignation was closely followed by remarks from President Lee Jae-myung, who voiced “utter bewilderment at the unexpected outcome” and attributed the early exit to a “failure of organisation and personnel.” The president’s statement, posted on social media, criticised the prioritisation of favouritism over competence in leadership appointments.

The sentiment was echoed by former Manchester United star Park Ji-sung, who described the situation as “miserable.” The public reaction has been intense, with reports of threats against the coach and the need to keep player and staff arrival locations secret upon their return to South Korea. This anger is not solely due to the recent tournament performance but has been building over time.

Tournament Performance and Public Reaction

South Korea‘s campaign in Group A began with a promising 2-1 victory against the Czech Republic. However, subsequent losses, including a 1-0 defeat to Mexico and another 1-0 loss to South Africa, sealed their fate. The team, featuring prominent players such as Son Heung-min, Lee Kang-in of Paris St-Germain, and Bayern Munich‘s Kim Min-jae, needed only a point against South Africa to secure progression.

During the crucial match against South Africa, Hong made the decision to bench captain Son Heung-min, a move that drew considerable scrutiny after the team’s defeat. Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Lee Young-pyo publicly described the performance as “the worst match by a Korean football team in the 21st century.” The team then endured a three-day wait to learn if they would advance as one of the best third-placed teams, ultimately confirming their elimination.

The team’s training camp was reportedly not a harmonious environment, with media personnel overheard mocking Son’s military exemption earlier in June. This incident led to players boycotting domestic media duties for several days. Son, who turns 34 in July, may consider his international career following this disappointment. A planned welcome ceremony at Incheon International Airport was cancelled, though public ire has largely focused on the governance of the sport rather than the players themselves.

Calls for Reform and Administrative Scrutiny

The criticism extends to the leadership of the Korea Football Association (KFA), particularly its president, Chung Mong-gyu, who has held the position since 2013. Chung faced scrutiny for hiring Hong in July 2024, bypassing standard procedures, similar to his earlier appointment of Jurgen Klinsmann. These decisions led to questions regarding the fairness and transparency of the KFA’s hiring processes.

Public dissatisfaction with Hong’s appointment was evident from his first game in charge against Palestine in Seoul in September 2024, where he was booed. The Ministry of Sports conducted an investigation into the KFA in November 2024, recommending the suspension of Chung and other officials. However, the KFA secured a court injunction, allowing Chung to run for and win a fourth term in February 2025.

Chung, a member of the family that owns Hyundai, a conglomerate with historical ties to the KFA, announced in May that he would step down after the World Cup. He acknowledged the controversies and criticisms during his tenure, attributing them to his own shortcomings. Political parties have also weighed in, with representatives from the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) and the People Power Party (PPP) calling for a parliamentary probe into the KFA’s operations. Lawmakers, including Rep. Park Beo-kye and Rep. Song Young-gil of the DPK, and Rep. Kim Seung-su of the PPP, have demanded a thorough review and accountability from the KFA, highlighting the need for significant structural changes within Korean football.

Contrasting Fortunes with Japan and Future Outlook

The current state of South Korean football is often contrasted with the structured approach seen in Japan. While South Korea has historically been a dominant force in Asian football, with 11 consecutive World Cup appearances, there is a perception that they have fallen behind their regional rival. The K League, established in 1983 as Asia’s first professional league, once outpaced Japan’s J League, which began a decade later.

Recent results underscore this shift. In October, Brazil defeated South Korea 5-0 in Seoul, while days later, Japan lost 3-2 to Brazil in Tokyo. In March, South Korea suffered a 4-0 loss to Ivory Coast, whereas Japan became the first Asian team to beat England, securing a 1-0 victory at Wembley. Clubs in the J League are now reportedly outperforming their K League counterparts in Asian competitions and are exporting more talent to Europe, with the Japanese national team now exclusively comprising European-based players.

With no coach, an outgoing federation president, and a strong desire for change, the current crisis presents a potential turning point for South Korean football. The pain of the 2026 World Cup exit could serve as a catalyst for significant reforms within the sport’s administration and development.

The KFA and its leadership have been under intense scrutiny, with calls for an overhaul to address the issues that have contributed to the team’s recent performance. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has been asked to investigate the causes of the problem and propose preventative measures.

Hong Myung-bo resigned as South Korea’s head coach the day after his team’s group-stage exit from the World Cup.Photograph: Antonio Ojeda/ZUMA Press Wire/Shutterstock Credit: theguardian.com

The political pressure for reform underscores the national importance placed on football and the desire to restore public trust in its administration. The focus remains on ensuring that competence and transparency guide future decisions within Korean football.

South Africa has advanced to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in its history, following a 1-0 victory over South Korea. The decisive goal came from Thapelo Maseko in the second half, sparking celebrations among the team and fans.

The win on Wednesday secured South Africa’s place in the last 32, with the team finishing on four points in Group A, behind winners Mexico. South Korea, despite the loss, still has a chance to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Historic Achievement for Bafana Bafana

The match saw Thapelo Maseko fire a low finish into the bottom right-hand corner in the 63rd minute, after receiving a precise pass from Tshepang Moremi. This goal proved to be the difference, sending South Africa into the knockout rounds after failing to advance from the group stage in their previous three World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002, and 2010.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos described the experience as “fantastic” and highlighted the team’s tactical performance. He noted the difficulty South Korea faced in finding space, and the “heart-stopping moments” in the final 20 minutes after his side scored.

South Korea began the match with more possession and created early opportunities. Kim Min-jae’s header was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, and Lee Kang-in fired over the bar shortly after. However, South Africa gradually found their rhythm, with Maseko nearly scoring in the 19th minute before a tackle from Lee Ki-hyuk.

Goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu made a double save, first denying Thalente Mbatha and then smothering Evidence Makgopa’s follow-up effort. Despite South Korea’s captain Son Heung-min coming on at half-time, South Africa maintained their defensive solidity and eventually found the breakthrough.

Thapelo Maseko is jumped on by teammates as South Africa celebrate scoring against South Korea.Photograph: Moisés Castillo Credit: theguardian.com

Widespread Celebrations and Future Outlook

The historic victory led to widespread celebrations, both in Guadalupe’s Monterrey Stadium where the match was played, and among fans in Johannesburg. Many supporters sacrificed sleep to watch the early morning kickoff, with streets later filling with people celebrating the achievement.

Football fan Lorenz Kohler remarked on the national excitement, suggesting that the entire country likely stayed awake for the match. He compared this moment to South Africa’s hosting of the World Cup in 2010, stating that the current achievement surpasses anything from that year in terms of footballing performance.

The team’s performance has also silenced critics who had doubted their capabilities before the tournament. Fan Byron Pillay noted that many had written off South Africa, making the victory even more satisfying. He credited Hugo Broos with making dreams a reality, akin to what Clive Barker did in the past.

South Africa players celebrate after the match [Raquel Cunha Credit: aljazeera.com

Hugo Broos, who took charge of South African men’s football in 2021, expressed the emotional significance of the win, particularly as the 2026 World Cup is expected to mark the end of his nearly four-decade managerial career. He stated that the team came to Mexico aiming to survive the group stage, and their success brought a moment of intense emotion for him.

The South African government also extended congratulations, highlighting the team’s determination, discipline, and fighting spirit. The victory is seen as an inspiration to South Africans globally and a showcase of the country’s football talent. Diplomats and politicians joined in the congratulatory messages across social media.

Looking ahead, South Africa is scheduled to face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on 28 June. The team’s belief in themselves was evident, with Broos stating that they will fight for the entire 90 minutes and beyond if necessary in their next match.

By Dominic Hayes — 25 June 2026 — 3 min read

South Africa has secured a place in the World Cup 2026 knockout phase for the first time in its history, following a 1-0 victory over South Korea. The winning goal was scored by Thapelo Maseko in the 63rd minute, propelling South Africa into second place in Group A, behind co-hosts Mexico.

The result marks a significant turnaround for Bafana Bafana, who had previously failed to advance from the group stage in their three prior World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002, and 2010. Captain Ronwen Williams noted that the team used external predictions of an early exit as motivation.

Tactical Decisions and Match Highlights

South Korea began the match with their captain, Son Heung-min, on the bench, a decision that surprised many given his prominence as the country’s all-time top appearance maker with 146 caps. He was introduced at half-time but had limited influence on the game. This tactical choice was made despite Son showing no signs of injury in the previous match.

Early in the game, South Korea threatened when Kim Min-jae‘s header was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba, and Lee Kang-in fired over the bar. South Africa gradually found their rhythm, with Maseko nearly scoring in the 19th minute, only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle from Lee Gi-hyuk. Kim Seung-gyu, South Korea‘s goalkeeper, also made a double save, stopping efforts from Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa.

Maseko‘s decisive goal came from a precise pass by Moremi, which he shifted onto his left foot before finding the bottom right-hand corner of the net. This goal was scored amidst unusual circumstances, as news of Mexico‘s goals in their match against the Czech Republic caused celebrations among fans in the stadium, including some South Korean supporters, which may have contributed to the distraction.

Implications for Both Teams

With this victory, South Africa will now face Canada in the Round of 32 on June 28 in Los Angeles. This will be a challenging fixture, as South Africa is considered an unknown quantity, having struggled in their opening match against Mexico and securing a late point against the Czech Republic. However, their performance against South Korea, characterized by discipline and a threat on the counter, was their strongest yet.

South Africa will also see the return of their midfielder, Teboho Mokoena, who was suspended due to a yellow card. Mokoena‘s ability to dictate the tempo of the game could be crucial for their upcoming match at SoFi Stadium.

Thapelo Maseko scored South Africa's winning goal with a clinical left-footed finish.Getty Images Credit: nytimes.com

For South Korea, the loss means they will have to wait to see if they qualify for the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. While they still have a strong chance of progressing, their initial expectation of finishing second in Group A was not met. The decision to bench Son Heung-min, who has not scored in 13 Major League Soccer appearances this season and whose last World Cup goal was in 2018, has been a topic of discussion.

The large Korean population in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, many of whom are strong football supporters, had anticipated seeing their national team play in the Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium. While this is now unlikely, current forecasts suggest South Korea has an 89 percent chance of advancing to play a Round of 32 match in Seattle.
